"Oh come on Harper don't be like that", she said as she turned around and began sashaying out of the room. I grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
"Like what, Melody?"
"Oh, you know", she said in a sugar sweet voice as fake as her nails. "Ouch. That hurts Harper let go please, honey".
"No, Mel , I don't know, tell me"
"Harper Hon, don't make this harder than it is. You know I love you honey but I'm moving on. Friends grow apart. Don't act like you didn't see this coming". After so many years of such close friendship Melody doesn't even cringe or flinch or look even slightly bothered as she says the words that are like daggers through my chest.
"Guess it was all a lie then", I do a sarcastic and hurt chuckle as I gracefully walk out of the room. If I'm leaving this friendship then I'm leaving it with a dash of dignity and a dash of sass. Because at this point it really must've been fake. For her at least.
"Harp I can't control how you twist this honey, so tell all your friends I'm the devil, you stubborn little..." her voice got frustrated and crumbly at the end. Melody only let herself get this way around people she trusted, so I assume at this point it was force of habit around me. She took a breath and smoothed her skirt.
"Don't make me into a monster. You know it was never fake. You were my best friend, the only person I could be myself around. And I'll never forget that or stop being grateful for the memories we made. But we're grown up now. No more making forts in the woods or sneaking out to the 7-Eleven during sleepovers. You're too much of a distraction. You know I hate cliche, and this is where this breakup is heading towards, but I don't know how else to put it".
I knew what she was saying, and couldn't put my response into words, yet somehow she knew how I was feeling also. My ties would now also be cut to the popular world, so better start my farewells to Aleeyah, Tom, Ciena, and the rest of the posse. I guess I'll miss it but they were never really my people anyway. The real Melody was. But I guess the nail polish fumes got to her.
I know what you're thinking. I should be happy I finally broke free from that monster. But real Melody was really an amazing person.
