I jumped up from my bed, instantly hitting my head on the top bunk. “Ow. Oh, my
gods. Ouch,” I groaned, sliding down onto the bedroom floor.
“Ugh, what the hell, Alex,” Morgan, my mate hissed, looking over from the top
bunk.
“Well, be lucky it was only me this time,” I said, getting up from the floor.
“Yeah. I am,” She shuddered and looked towards the window.
“Don’t worry, they can’t get you this time. I promise,” I said, lighting a match and
moving it towards the candle wick.
“What are you doing?” Morgan gasped, watching the flame.
“No, it’s okay. We can light candles at night, as long as the windows are closed.
Just no lamps until sunrise,” I said, placing the candle into a dish and resting the
match onto my tongue.
“Augh! Why?” Morgan yelped, recoiling at the sight.
“It’s nothing,” I said, looking up at her. “And keep your voice down, please. They
might hear us.” I grabbed my clothes and a candle and walked to the bathroom.
“Where are you going?” She yelled after me.
“To shower. I need to get to work in 4 hours,” I said, sticking my head into the
room. “And keep your voice down. I already told you.”
I walked into the bathroom and set the candle down on the vanity counter. The
light caught on my face and I stopped. It was weird. Every time I looked at myself, I
neverlooked the same. The goosebumps ran up and down my arms as I whipped
around, just to see the shadows leaving the room. Nope. No. No way. I’m not doing
this, I thought to myself, running out of my room.
“Woah, what went down?” Morgan said, watching me shove the clothes back in
the drawer.
“I saw another of one them. And I don’t know how it got in,” I said, closing the
drawer silently.
“Another one? But… We made sure last night,” She whispered, panic in her voice.
“I don’t know how they got in but what I do know is that I have to go to work,” I
sighed and grabbed my bag.
“Really? Okay,” Morgan groaned and followed me out of the room.
“Yeah,” I slid down the stair banister to avoid making any sounds. Morgan followed me.
“Hey, just remember to watch out for the kids,” She said, grabbing my shoulder as
I walked out.
“I know. I will,” I said, as I left to descend into chaos.
