Prologue
A cold winters breeze was cutting through the forest as two shadows chased each other through the nights. The first shadow, way ahead of the other, jumped over a fallen tree and made even more speed to make its way out of the forest. The second shadow, just as agile as the first, had no intention in losing its prey; it doubled its speed and followed the other to an open clearing in the thick forest. Here the light of the moon had free game and lit up the hunter and its prey. The hunter smiled as the moonlight shone upon the face of a young woman standing in the middle of the clearing. Slowly he stepped into the moonlight and revealed his own face.
A hidden grin appeared on the girls face as the man stepped forward. The man was handsome to say the least. He looked somewhere in his mid twenties, and ancient at the same time. His pitch-black hair fell over his piercing blue eyes that seemed to stare into your soul. His well-built body showed the strength of the hunter. Wearing black jeans and shirt with a leather jacket, his muscles were hidden, but his strength was anything but that. On his back he wore a black sheath containing a katana, the hilt was black with a wolf fur tassel tied to it.
‘That was fun, wasn’t it? Maria’ the man said slowly walking towards the girl. Her long red hair blew in the wind, so unnatural it looked like flames, her face turned to the ground.
‘Oh yes Marcus, indeed it was,’ the girl, Maria, said looking up. The pitch-black skinny jean and black top under a black leather jacket made her almost invisible if the moon wasn’t in the sky. Two black sheaths were crossed on her back, decorated with a silver bird. One was longer than the other but they both had a black hilt sticking out, both with a bright red tassel tied to it.
The hunter felt her vivid green eyes cut through his skin, into his very being, before they turned bright red, ‘but then, you already know that I love games’. Suddenly the hunter became afraid of his prey, became afraid of the glowing red feline like eyes that stared at him from the centre of the clearing. Suddenly the hunter became the prey.
The minutes became seconds as the girl lunged at him and dug her nails in the skin of his arms. Immediately Marcus reacted to the attack and kicked Maria in the stomach, so she had to let go of his arm. Maria needed only a second to recover from the kick and pulled a knife out of her belt. Acting like she was having difficulties recovering she made Marcus take a few steps towards her. When he was close enough she lunged the knife at him, slicing his arm and leaving a large cut on his upper down to his lower arm. ‘Not deep enough, come on Maria, you can do better’ she thought as she looked at the cut.
‘Bitch’ Marcus hissed as he looked at the cut and pulled a katana from the sheath.
Maria answered Marcus’ katana with one of her own, pulling a large katana from one of the sheaths on her back. She loved the long slender swords for she was able to use two at the same time. The fight continued with sparks flying around as the swords touched. The fight already lasted for 45 minutes when a smile crawled its way onto Maria’s face, her opponent was getting tired and left more openings in his defence. Taking the fight to the next level, knowing her prey wouldn’t stand a change; she pulled the second, the shorter sword, out of its sheath. Helplessly Marcus tried to defeat his opponent, driving his body to the edge. Maria searched for the ultimate chance and the right opening and when she found it she kicked Marcus in the stomach, causing him to fall onto the grass.
‘Game over’ Maria said and in the blink of an eye she slid his throat.
Slowly she turned around and started to walk away from the body that had contained the spirit of Marcus ‘the wolf’ Wolfsbane.
Unaffected of the man she had killed she walked to the edge of the clearing where a brown bag was lying at the base of a big tree.
‘Eagle for the Phoenix can you hear me? Over’ a voice called in her ear. Maria softly pushed a small button on the earpiece.
