When I was back in the motel room, I turned on the TV and kicked off my heels. I sat down on the bed and let myself fall back. Looking at the ceiling, I let out a deep sigh. I closed my eyes for and just listened to the calm voice comming from the TV. It was some documentary about the ocean on National Geographic. I've always loved animals and such documentaries and found some peace in it, when everything else was kinda messy.
I must have fallen asleep, when a knock on the door startled me. Must be Jake, I thought. I got up and streched to fully wake up. I looked to the clock. 9 pm, in one and a half hour I would need to be at work. Not that I cared much though.
When I opened the door, it was not Jake. Well, not only Jake. He had one Agent on every side of him, they looked me serious in the eyes, holding up their badges.
"Agent Styles and Banner. This guy told us you might be involved in this," Agent Styles, the smaller one with the piercing green eyes, said. He was hot, you couldn't deny it. But so was the other one. I smiled at them but didn't step aside.
"Maybe. Maybe not. I would like to talk to Jake alone first, if that's okay," I said, looking at the kid with my "Why did you bring them with you"-glare. They looked at each other, then at me again.
"I'm afraid we can't do that ma'am." Agent Banner actually looked a little sorry, he seemed to be the good cop.I tried to hold down the urge to roll my eyes and stepped aside. The three man got in and looked around the room. Chess was watching them curiously but wouldn't care enough to even growl. Such a good boy.
"So take a seat, gentlemen. This is my dog Chess and he won't hesitate to bite your arse if I want him to." I wasn't sure myself if I was joking or not. But then again, Chess was probably the last dog who would ever attack someone. He was simply too kind-hearted. Agent Banner smiled at him but I thought I could see something in his eyes .. maybe sadness? I don't know.
I asked them if any of them wanted something to drink. "I only got beer though." I was never the one who cared much about a healthy lifestyle. My food was mostly stored in cans. Agent Styles smiled at me.
"That sounds actually really good." His voice was deep and his smile was really warm, eventhough you could tell that he's been through some real shit. I smirked when I walked to the fridge to get him a beer.
"So.. what can I do for you agents?" I asked them when I sat down again, handing Agent Styles the open bottle.
"We had a little talk with Jake and he told us you've experienced quite the same. As we are very interested in finding this guy, we need to get as many information as possible." Agent Banner got that little block out of his pocket and clicked his pen. I flinched a little, remembering the things of that night.
"Well I don't know much more than you already got from that case now. My parents have been murdered when I was 16 in, like, the exact same way. I was adopted like Jake when I was 7. And since that has happened, I lived on the road, trying to find this guy. But as you know, I wasn't really successful." I tried to keep as many details as possible to myself. I didn't want them to know everything about me. Nobody does and nobody should.
Agent Banner noted something on the little yellow paper, nodding while writing. Again, he and his partner shared this knowing glaze, the same they did when Jake first talked to them earlier. Something was up to them and I started to get curious about it.---
After half an hour, the Agents said their goodbyes and left a card in case I needed something or whatever. I was sure I'd throw it away shortly afterwards but they didn't need to know of course.
I asked Jake to stay for a little longer and that I would bring him to his aunt, who was living just down the road, later.
"So .. why did you bring them with you? I thought it was clear enough that we would talk alone." I said as soon as I closed the door after the two gentlemen. He looked at me and sighed.
"I didn't know what to do and they seemed to be really friendly and actually wanted to help me in stead of just find this asshole. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd give anything to find this bitch and beat the living hell out of him but nobody really seemed to care about what I was thinking." He looked down at his hands. He seemed quite nervous, when I sat down at the opposite of the table.
"I'm gonna tell you something. I didn't admit everything when the Agents were here. I hid something. I was driving through the whole country, and sometimes I happened to find people whose parents kind of experienced the same as we did. They all have been adopted and all of their parents have been murdered by cutting the throat. And there was something special that I didn't notice at first but when I tried to find a motif, I pinned the places to a map and saw that those places, connected with lines, would result in a sign. But I still don't know what kind of sign this is, neither if its completet yet."
I showed him a smaller map I was always carrying with me and also a list of signs that could be the right one. He shortly looked at the pictures and the maps, then up to me again.
"You should show the Agents. I'm really sure that they can help us with this," he said, looking me deeply in the eyes. I know he was kinda right but I didn't want to involve the government into this. I guessed they'd already know it, though. I signed.
"Jake, let me take you to your aunt okay? I need to think about it and also, I need to be at work in 30 minutes so .." I said, standing up, already grapping my keys. Maybe work would help me to find a decision. Eventhough, nothing much would be happening, as every night.
