I watched as they carelessly buried my Grandma, my best friend. She wouldn't want me standing here crying over her. She told me it was bound to happen, but I didn't think this soon.
I felt defeated. A defeated 12 year old girl who finally had their first step in reality. My only guardian is now gone. My hand tightened around the hold of the umbrella as I stared at her casket being lowered into the ground.
I had no mother, no father, brother, or sister. I was a goner.
Feeling a hand settle on my shoulder, I tensed up knowing it was my perverted uncle, "Now now darling. It'a guh be okay. You're a guh stay wid mi til yuh get olda."
My nose flared as tears raced down my cheeks. He took me away and I walked with him to the black cars that was going to take us back to his home. I disliked that fact that I had to live with him and his gang friends and messed up wife. At least I looked forward to spending time with my favorite cousin who is a year younger.
"Yuh know.. yuh cud duh mi plenty of gud inna mi company and-..."
I censored him out. My face formed with disgust as those vile words came out his mouth. As much as I wanted to cry harder, I didn't. My grandma taught me to be tougher than this— to know that I shouldn't allow any man to touch me in this way.
I couldn't wait to be done with this retched place called Jamaica...
