Maya Winter

The next day, I sit down with the kids that are becoming my friends. They're all so nice and funny, so amazing compared to Riley and Hannah.

"Hey, Maya, did you finish that drawing you were working on the other day?" Cierra asks me. I shake my head. "Not completely. But I'm starting to get close. I finished a bunch of shading in the face yesterday. Now all I need to do is my hair."

"I'm excited! You're really awesome. I wish I could draw like you," she says. Justin looks over at me. "So, how's Tyler been doing? On his school stuff, I mean. That sounded like a weird question..." he blushed slightly in embarrassment. That would have been more awkward if Tyler was sitting here, but he's went to the bathroom.

He swept his light brown fringe over the side of his face and tried not to make eye contact. "No, that's fine. He's doing well, I apparently have a talent for explaining things. He seems to understand everything a lot better."

The bell rings for next period and I stand up, smiling. "See you later, guys." "Bye, Maya," Hunter waved and walked in the other direction. Cody, Justin, and Libby follow. Cierra and Abby come with me. Just get through English, and you'll be done. You can see Tyler there, and then you can go home. Good.

I block out Abby, who hasn't said a kind word to me since I've met her. "So, I haven't asked you before, what do you have after this?" I ask Cierra.

"Oh, choir. My teacher's really cool, I have fun people in that class, but I can't really sing. It would be cool to be talented enough to sing as well as the other kids in my class, but I just wasn't granted that gift, I guess," she explains as we walk.

We just stay silent for a minute or two. Then, she stops. "Alright, see you!" she chimes, waving and walking into the choir classroom with Abby.

I make my way to my last period. When I walk in, I notice a person that I forgot was in this class with me. Hannah. I resentfully shoot a glare at her, which to my surprise, she doesn't return.

In fact, when I sit down, she stands, grabbing her bag and walks in my direction. She sets her things on the desk next to me and sits down in the empty chair.

But instead of talking, she pulls out a post-it note and writes, "I'm really sorry, Maya, I made a huge mistake".

I look at her sternly. She nods. "I thought maybe it'd be cooler to hang out with Riley, but I was wrong. I don't know what happened to her! She was saying so many horrible things about people that I really like, and I was just so wrong about her," she continues on another little note.

She takes out one last note. "Please forgive me," she writes slowly. I contemplate what to do. People make mistakes. But why would you ever do what she did to me and expect an automatic apology?

Ultimately, the memories of good times I did spend with Hannah got to me, and I wrote, "Yes".

I hope she doesn't take that decision for granted.
