"I can't believe this is happening..."

I rolled my eyes in frustration. She had not stopped talking about Luke's proposal.

Every other word was 'Luke' or 'wedding' these days. I was getting literally sick just thinking about it but to have her talk about it all the time was only making it worse.

"Brielle, you'll be my maid of honor right?" Mari asked and I nodded before speaking.

"Of course, I wouldn't miss it for the world." I said softly, thinking about how much I was lying through my teeth.

I loved Mari, don't get me wrong, it was just hard to hear her talking about the only love of my life as her new fiancé.

I was still having a hard time realizing that this was even happening in the first place...

I didn't even know her and Luke were that serious. I suppose that just shows how much I pay attention though.

Mari was sitting on the opposite side of the booth in this old coffee shop where we were currently about to order lunch.

The bell on the door jingled and in walked the beautiful boy who stole my heart all those years ago. At first, I thought of Luke as Gollum with my heart where he was overprotective and creepily called it precious but even describing it now in my head sounds ridiculous.

Now I only see him as Andy from Toy Story, always getting new toys but never being satisfied enough to keep playing with one in particular.

*sigh*

Even to me this doesn't make sense and these are my thoughts.

I guess he's not Andy now though because he's getting flipping married.

I'm not quite sure I even know how I'm going to get through this.

Lots of alcohol is what my grandma would say. Yeah...she's dead now though so I don't think that's the best advice.

"Hi babe," Luke said, kissing Mari on the lips, "Brielle." he said eyeing me closely.

I groaned in what sounded like annoyance as he sat down. It was actually, not annoyance but in the dread of watching the two of them suck on each other's faces.

Luke and I were friends first. I had met Mari only a year ago at the same time Luke did and they started dating about a month after.

I didn't think it was honestly going to last.

Mari was not, in fact, Luke's type. She was loud and obnoxious, [like me] she liked to eat off his plate, which I knew he secretly hated.

I asked him once why he was so in love with her if he didn't love the things about her.

He simply said, "You either try to love someone's imperfections, or you spend your whole life searching for the perfect person." Then he leaned down real close to my ear and whispered, "Which one do you think I chose?"

Well, yeah that makes sense but seriously? The person he's settling with eats her pizza without the toppings. She says it has, "too much fat.".....who does that?

I asked her then why she didn't just put spaghetti sauce on a bagel. She said...you know what? Nevermind. She basically complained about how she'll turn into a rhino if she doesn't eat right.

"So what are you girls doing today?" Luke asked, smirking at his girlfriend while she tried to fit the entire bowl of lettuce in her mouth.

"Geez, Mari is it going to run away if you don't eat it fast?" I asked, pieces of lettuce sticking out of her mouth.

She giggled and Luke shifted in his seat.

He cast a sideways glance to me. My heart jumped in my chest.

We made small talk for a few more minutes and then when we were finished we got up to leave.

As soon as we stepped out of our booth, we realized it was rush hour, and everyone had crowded inside and around the bar for coffee.

"I'm going to get the car, I'll drive by to pick you guys up." Mari said and scampered off, weaving in and out of people.

I glanced at Luke and he shrugged.

Someone was standing next to me and obviously didn't notice my presence. He was talking with his hands and waving them around like a maniac.

Next thing I know, his arm flies close to my head and whacks me in the ear, knocking me toward the ground.

Luke's arm shoots out and hooks around my waist, pulling me up close to him. Our chests pressed together and I had stopped breathing entirely.

He stared into my eyes and smiled his grin. You know the one.

"Almost got caught under the wave, I see." He says, still looking directly into my eyes. They suddenly flick down to my lips and back up again.

The movement is so fast I almost don't catch it, but I do and my breath hitches.

I suddenly realize how close we are and the moment is so intense I lose sense of our surroundings and we just stare at each other. His hand reaches up and brushed back a loose piece of hair. This was a surreal feeling.

A horn honks outside, and the minute passes, breaking us apart but still close from the crowded space.

We head outside and get into Mari's car.

"Anything interesting happen while I was gone?" Mari asks and gives her fluttery smile.

"Nope." Luke answers lightly.

"Yeah...nothing at all." I reply and look out the window.

I look towards the mirror on Luke's side of the car that I was sitting behind and find him staring at me.

His eyes hold a lot of emotion that I can't decipher.

I look away before it becomes dangerous.

Things just became messy.

Damn.
