They had always been best friends; somehow. They really weren’t anything like and they didn’t hang out with the same people. The only thing they had in common was living in the same neighborhood and how much they loved each other. Or, it used to be like that. When Abi was only five she met Luke, they became best friends. Victoria moved in two years later, and since then it had always been the three of them. Victoria was pretty, there was no doubt about it. She had short blonde hair, big blue eyes, and a great body. Victoria had a cute laugh, was great at flirting, and did anything she wanted. Luke was attractive, at least Abi thought so, as did several other girls. Luke had dirty blonde hair and scruff on his face. He had blue eyes but they were brighter than Victoria’s and a crooked smile that somehow fit him perfectly. He was tall and strong. Then, there was Abi. Abi had medium length, straight, brown hair. She had plan brown eyes and big lips. Abi was short and average, her body was average and so was her height and strength. She was nice and laughed too loudly and blushed too easily.

At age 12 Luke played on the football team and Victoria was a cheerleader. Abi took guitar lessons. They spent every Friday night at Abi’s house where they slept in the living room and ate popcorn and watched movies all night. Her parents never worried about what Jake would do, not like with other boys where they got light headed when she talked about them. “Guys this is a shitty movie, change it” “Don’t cuss, Luke!” “Don’t be stupid Ab, grow up” “Guys, just give me the remote!” Luke snapped and Abi tossed it into his lap. He scrolled through Netflix until he found a movie; Spiderman. “Literally, Luke, this is like the tenth time this month” Victoria rolled her eyes. “You can choose next, Vic” He compromised and Abi crawled in the middle and flopped over on her stomach. “Deal”.

At age 13 Abi watched Luke play football and Victoria cheer for their middle school every Thursday night. “Come on, Luke!” Abi hollered as loud as she could. Luke kept running but she could tell he was losing momentum. Victoria squealed on the side line in her tiny uniform. The field lights fell down on her and Abi squinted. Luke passed the line, TOUCHDOWN! Abi and Victoria screamed. The game was over, they won by 7. After they both said goodbye to their team mates they joined Abi in the school parking lot. She brought them in for a group hug. “Vic, you looked so hot out there. Luke, you won the fricken game!” Each of them laughed and said “thanks” in unison. After they game they would go to Abis, like they used to do every Friday.

At age 14 they were starting freshman year. Every Wednesday night, when none of them were busy, they would sleep over at Abis like always. For the first part of time they would do homework and drink lemonade. After dinner and Abi’s parents and sister retreated upstairs they would commence to their annual truth or dare, would you rather, and question game rounds. “Truth or Dare, Luke?” Victoria raised one eyebrow. Luke chewed on his lip before answering, “Dare” “I dare you to kiss me”. Luke’s face turned red and Victoria smirked. Abi felt her stomach drop and looked immediately at Luke. He didn’t react how she hoped he would, instead he did the dare, and he leaned in and pressed his lips to Victoria’s before sitting back up. “First kiss?” he asked. She nodded. “Me too” he said and snorted.

At age 15 they were in the middle of freshman year. Their games got old so they found new things to do. They would hang out at Victoria’s house, for the first time. Sometimes they would swim in her pool or mess around in her yard. Other times they would take a walk, watch a movie, play ping pong or air hockey. One night, they were all bored. “Can we please just do something already?” Luke moaned. “Seriously” Abi backed him up. “I have an idea” Victoria giggled and opened up a cabinet beneath the sink, she took out a bottle. “The hell?” Abi took a step closer. “Its rum” Luke said and snatched in from Victoria’s hands. “Ever had some?” Victoria stepped towards the bottle in Luke’s hand. “Guys” Abi warned but Luke opened the bottle and tipped it back. He shook his head from side to side and shoved the bottle into Abi’s hand. “Your turn” Abi moaned but gave in and took a drink. It burned the back of her throat and she couldn’t see straight. Victoria went next, she handled like a pro. Maybe there were things abi didn’t know about her best friends.

At age 16 they were sophomores. Things were not exactly the same this year. Luke and Victoria were both on varsity for cheer and football. Abi started writing and got really good at it. Luke and Victoria went to homecoming together and soon after began dating. At first they tried to all keep hanging out but it was so weird for Abi. She started telling them she didn’t want to or she couldn’t. She didn’t go to their games either, why spend three hours amongst hundreds of other people, her support didn’t even mean much to them now? They made new friends. Later that year the two of them broke up though. Abi called them to tell them to come to her house one night. “Guys. We need to talk. Please”. “Then talk” Victoria sassed and Luke commented, “Yeah?” “I can’t not hang out with you guys. It’s weird going to Luke’s house and telling Victoria I’m busy and the other way around. You need to make up and stop being awkward so we can all be friends again” Luke looked at Victoria, “shes right” Victoria smiled, “Come hug me buddy” The two of them hugged and Abi smiled. She had her friends back.

This year they were 17, seniors next year. It was summer, the hottest one in years. Nobody went outside unless they had a pool, Abi was lucky to be friends with Victoria. Luke had been gone at a camp for over a month now and Abi had been itching just to be in his presence. She had also realized something that summer. A fact that made her want to cry or throw up. She was pretty sure she was in love with Luke. After two weeks her stomach felt empty no matter how much she ate and she kept waiting for a letter from Luke. Without him there she wasn’t herself. She could hang out with Abi or her other friends, which she finally had, but nothing filled the void that was there. It didn’t fill until Luke came home at night and she ran out into his yard at 3am in the rain the next morning.
