"you don't need a reason to help people."

Honestly, Kate was scared of going over Vanessa's house. Her heart beated a million times faster after every step they took. Kate didn't know why she was so scared. Maybe it was because she hasn't gone over someone's house in a long time.

"Hey, are you alright?" she asked. We had arrived at her front door.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Kate said, sighing. Kate was anti-social and it was pretty obvious. She didn't want to be here. Why did she say yes? The two girls walked inside and Kate thought that Vanessa's house was extraordinary. It was a big house, no lie, and she seemed pretty rich.

"This is my house. Uh, I have a brother who's away for the week." Vanessa said, walking to the kitchen, "Mom. I'm home!"

Mrs. Gallagher came from upstairs and started to slow her pace once she noticed Kate.

"You brought a guest?" she asked, finally on the last step.

"Yeah, mom. You said I should make friends." Vanessa said, passing her mother to go up the stairs, "come on, Kate."

She followed Vanessa and looked back at her mother. She didn't seem to like Kate.

Hours passed by and the girls chatted and laughed. Kate was starting to get used to Vanessa, she seemed friendly and she actually wanted to be friends with her. So Kate told her about her past. When Kate was younger, her mother passed away from cancer. Her father tries to spend time with her but she's never been the excited type.

And with her grandmother in the hospital, it isn't helping the situation. Kate used to go over her grandmother's house everyday after school but that changed right after her mother died.

"Oh my, I'm so sorry," Vanessa said, looking down at her fiddling hands. Kate smiled weakly and spoke, "oh it's fine. It's been a long time anyways."

"You didn't have to tell me that." Vanessa said, "it's okay if you didn't want to."

"Oh please, that's what best friends do right?" Kate asked, smiling gleefully.

"yes, that's what they do." Vanessa said, "so I'll tell you something."

Kate looked up at Vanessa.

"I'm adopted." she said, her face sadden, "my mother gave me up and my father died."

Kate was sad herself. She didn't know how to react, "I'm sorry, but I'm here. So whenever you need someone, it's me."

Vanessa chuckled softly, "yes, okay."

Morning arrived and Kate was sound asleep in her bed. Yesterday was fun. Kate hasn't experienced that much fun since... since her mother died. But it was time to get to school so she got it out of her head.

She did her daily routine and went down the stairs. Her dad slept on the couch with his hand dangling off the edge. She chuckled quietly and opened the front door. Instantly, the spring breeze went through her hair and it made her skin tingle.

Across the street, she saw a boy. He had blackish brown hair and fair skin. I've never seen him before. she thought.

She continued to walk until she got to school where she found Vanessa and sat down next to her.

"Oh no, Evelyn's going to go mad today." Kate said, laughing.

"I'm not scared of her." Vanessa said, "besides, she'll be all over my brother."

At that moment, Vanessa watched as Evelyn Sanders walked up the school stairs. She gave Vanessa a dirty look and started to walk her way.

No.  Please no. I hate the attention.

"Hey nerds." Evelyn said to the two girls.

Vanessa sighed, "what are we? five?"

Evelyn scoffed, "you're the one that came at me. it was none of your business. you didn't even have a reason."

Kate rolled her eyes but she didn't dare to say anything.

"you don't need a reason to help people." Vanessa said, sighing, "brats like you wouldn't understand."

"Okay, but at least, I'm not ugly like her." Evelyn said, pointing towards Kate. Kate looked down, humiliated.

"You know. Its a shame you can't photoshop your personality." Kate said, looking up in anger.

"Well, you don't photoshop obviously. have you seen your pictures?" Evelyn said, making her friends laugh.

"Well, jealously is a  disease. Just get well soon, please." and with that we walked away, smiling stupidly at our immaturity.

Kate watched as her younger sister ran around the track, almost beating everyone in front of her.  Vanessa had gone home and school was over until tomorrow. Without any warning, the boy she saw this morning approached her.

"Hey. I'm Aidan."
