A voice pierced the halls as I start to head to my club.
"Hey Zeph!"
It is my friend, Demitri. He is a first year college buddy of mine and a childhood friend as well. He is about 5'9" and quite open about everything.
The thing about this encounter is ... it happens just about everyday. We both happen to be in the same club, the Duelist Kingdom. This club is a competitive dueling club that goes to competitions all over the place. Any challenge given to us is accepted, even forced on freshies, like us. Any chance to get better, I guess.
I personally like helping build decks then duel them, but my friends forced me in. Dueling has never come easy for me because I can't get into the duel like those protagonists in the shows. However, despite that, I am ranked in the top 3 duelists in the club out of 40.
"You going to the meeting?" Demitri asks.
"Where does it look like?" I say in a snarky tone.
"Mind if I get a ride there?" Demitri asks.
"Have I said no yet?" I mention.
Let me explain. The club is held at the head's house. The head is known as Mei, whom uses an Aesir deck. She is an incredible duelist that I had hoped to defeat her someday. I look up to her as a duelist. She is also really into Yu-Gi-Oh, and that led her to get a duel room installed, even fitted with working duel disks. Everything looks so realistic too. It really is well built.
As we arrive to Mei's house, we walk in and head to the basement, aka her duel arena. We arrive about 30 minutes early to get some extra duels in. Pretty sweet, huh? Usually it's just me and Demitri dueling and modifying our decks as we do. There are occasions where Mei will duel one of us and give us tips. Today happened to be one of those days.
"Thor! Attack his life points directly!" Mei yells.
"You know, you think my trap would have scared you," I say as I reveal my facedown, Mirror Force.
Her Thor blows up in her face. "No way, I took our her beast?!" I question.
"Nope," Mei says in response.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"You see, when Thor is sent to the graveyard, I can bring it back by banishing a Nordic Beast at the end phase," she says.
I wince as I see that big guy come back to the field. I only have 600 life points left.
"There's more," she says. "After coming back to the field, you take a whopping 800 points of damage, and you know what that means."
"That's game," I say. "Dang, I still can't beat you!"
"Well," she says in response. "It takes a lot to be at the top. A lot of hard work." She muttered something under her breath that I couldn't quite make out.
"What was that last bit?" I ask.
"Nothing!" She says, almost sounding too eager to change the topic.
I push off the topic and change it.
"Anyways, I was wondering if you guys wanted to come over to my dorm after this to watch Yu-Gi-Oh GX?" I ask.
"Sounds fun!" Demitri says in delight.
Mei looks at both of us. "Is your homework for Monday done?" We both stop dead in our tracks. I had completely forgotten that homework existed.
"Ok, fair point." I say, changing the plans instantly. "So how about this; we can work on homework before we start. Maybe not all our homework, but a good portion since we also have the rest of the weekend. That way we have a goal and if we don't reach it, we don't watch."
