Chapter 4
"Sir, there must be a misunderstanding. You've mistaken me for someone else. I'm not who you think I am."
"You're Catherina Mitchell."
"Yes, I told you that myself just a moment ago."
"You confirmed it. I already knew who you were. Now, let's go. We need to find a place to lie low until I figure out what to do with you."
I froze. How could he have known who I was? He was on the same plane; our encounter couldn't have been a coincidence.
"I'm not going anywhere with you," I stated firmly, edging away from him.
"You are."
"No, I don't know you, and I still believe there's been a mistake. I want to find Joseph. I'm sure he can explain everything."
He smirked cruelly. "I'm afraid you won't be seeing him anytime soon, not until I understand why you're here. Come on."
"No," I insisted, maintaining a safe distance. "Let me go."
"Honey, if I do that, you're dead."
A chill ran down my spine as I regarded him. "You have no choice. Either you trust me or you perish."
I could feel my heart pounding in my ears, sweat beading on my forehead. This couldn't be happening; it felt like a nightmare. As he reached for my hand, I instinctively backed into the car parked behind me.
"I don't have time to waste. They could be back any minute, and there may be others. Either you come willingly, or I'll have to restrain you."
"Restrain me? Then you must be a police officer," I said, grasping at hope.
"Not necessarily. Handcuffs have their uses. So, what's your decision?"
"Fine, I'll come," I murmured, feeling as though I had no other option.
"Excellent. Let's move. My car should be around here somewhere." I followed reluctantly beside him, my feet aching. I had never run so much in my life. After what felt like an eternity, he halted in front of a black vehicle. Opening the door, he motioned for me to get in. I hesitated.
"What's the matter now?" he asked impatiently.
"What if you're the one trying to kill me?"
He sighed in exasperation. "Do you think I would have risked my life to save you from those men if I intended to harm you?"
"No, but I don't know you."
"Get in. I promise I won't hurt you. I need you alive." With that, he pushed me inside and locked the door. Panic surged within me as he started the engine and I started to cry hysterically. All the tension and the mixed emotions I had inside welled up.
"Stop crying," he snapped. "You're not what I expected."
"Of course not! You know why? Because I'm damn sure I'm not the person you're looking for!" I yelled through tears streaming down my face.
"If you insist."
Why wouldn't he believe me? Who did he think I was? What did he want from me? Would I ever see my family again? In that moment, I even missed Michael, regretting not accepting his invitation to go out with him. Maybe he was old and unattractive, but he would have never hurt me.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked.
"To a safe place for now. You have some questions to answer and depending on your answers, I'll decide which path to choose and where your ultimate destination will be."
