Panicking because we're approaching the end of the book and I'm emotionally attached to this. I don't know how I'll function when I'm done. Don't worry though there is still ten or so left.

But to make this easier, the next several chapters, until the last three or so, will be a lot of time skipping. To figure out Peter and Laurel's ages, just look at the last two digits of the year. Now enough of me yakking off your ear (figuratively anyway) and let's get to the chapter.

By the way, do you guys actually read my author notes or do you just skip over them? Lol be honest, you won't hurt my feelings...much...😜

- So Small ~ Carrie Underwood

I was sat at my desk, looking over some evaluations I was required to do being the head of a department and such. I glanced over at the clock and frowned. It was 9:13 at night. Peter should've been back from the hospital by now. Biting my lip, I returned to my paperwork. It shouldn't have worried me as much as it did, since Peter was coming home later and later.

After six months as an intern, the hospital realized how much potential he had and upgraded to being an assistant of sorts. For the past two weeks, he's come home telling me stories of the surgeries he was allowed to help with without going into too much detail.

My phone buzzed and I was surprised to see it was from him.

Home in 5.

Those three words released all the tension from my body. I returned to my work, thinking strictly of my job.

I heard the door open and slam shut, making me jump in surprise. Keys jangled as they were set on the kitchen counter. I shuffled the papers on my desk together and set them aside in a neat order. "Hey, love. I have your dinner warm in the oven." There was no response. Frowning, I got up to greet the newcomer. Crash! I stepped away from the door. Picking up my letter-opener, which was basically a knife, I slyly crept toward the door. "Peter?" I called, seeing a figure's shadow. Pouncing into the room, wielding the knife, I stopped short to see broken glass on the floor in front of Peter.

His back was to me, but I knew it was him with one glance. Waving my hand, the object repaired itself. As I drew near, I observed his back, seeing his muscles tense underneath the uniform he wore. As my eyes wandered, they widened, seeing the dried blood up to his arms and on the part of his shirt I could see. I reached out to touch him, but I recoiled as he grabbed the bowl I repaired and smashed it on the ground. So the first time wasn't an accident.

Setting the letter-opener on the table, I drew enough courage to touch his back. His muscles relaxed at my touch, his shoulders loosening. "What happened?" I whispered so softly I didn't think he heard it. "I lost them." He murmured, not turning. My eyebrows drew together. What? Peter turned around. I looked down, seeing dried blood covering his entire front. I didn't notice the tears sticking to his eyelashes until he swiped at them.

"There was a car crash somewhere in the city and a family of four got rushed to the hospital. They were low on staff so they had me fill in. Laure, it was so bad. I haven't seen so much blood since the Giant War of 1014. The parents died on the way there and the oldest died just as we got him on the table. The second-eldest had the least amount of damage done and is probably still in the ICU. The two youngest, a boy and a girl, were being worked on side-by-side. I was assigned to the boy who didn't look much older than Susan. I won't go into too much detail, but he had internal bleeding from a wound in what we presumed was his kidney. We tried our best, gosh I tried, but we couldn't save him. The youngest, a little girl around Ed's age, died shortly after him."
