Chapter 1. Change of Plans

Emma's P.O.V

"Emma, are you up yet?"

I let out a groan. Normal people owned alarm clocks that did the job of waking them up. I however, had my very own walking, talking and sometimes yelling alarm clock that was also known as my mother. Unfortunately, this was an alarm clock that didn’t have a snooze button. I lifted my held off the pillow so I could glance at my clock. It was only seven am, so I shut my eyes and went back to sleep.

"Emma! Get out of bed this instant or I shall come up and personally drag you out of bed!” my mother yelled. I groaned and reluctantly rolled out of bed. I waltzed into my washroom, brushed my teeth and then stepped into the shower. Once I was done, I quickly wrapped a towel around myself and walked back into my room.

I opened my wardrobe, grabbed the first pair of shorts I saw, along with a sleeveless floral top. I then applied some light make up before combing my hair and tying it up. I wasn't the type of girl who would spend hours to get ready for school, which meant that I could sleep longer and that was definitely a plus.

I gave myself a one over, making sure I looked presentable before I left my room and descended down the stairs and into the kitchen. As soon as I entered, I saw my mum beaming at me.

"Oh thank god you're finally down. I thought I was going to have to pull the covers off you," she said. I smiled at her, but that didn’t last very long as my smile was replaced by a frown.

My eyes wandered along the kitchen counter behind my mother. She had cooked quite a large breakfast considering that it was just the two of us. We generally had cornflakes or something small and light for breakfast.

Was it some kind of special occasion…?

Shit, did I forget mother’s day again?!

"Uh, mum? What’s with the breakfast? I asked cautiously. The last time I had forgotten mother’s day, I had to listen to her give me a lecture about how I was ‘the worst daughter and how I never appreciated the things my mother did for me blah blah blah’. She wouldn’t stop passing snide remarks to make me feel guilty for a whole week.

I mentally shivered at that memory. That was one long week.

“Your brother’s coming over in a while,” she replied, grinning at the thought of seeing her son after several months.

Oh thank god. It wasn’t mother’s day.

 Phew.

"What?” I questioned a slight tone of surprise and shock in my voice.

"What’s with the sudden visit? And that too, this early in the morning?”

My mother looked at me nervously before replying, "He's coming to pick you up and take you with him, back to London."

I nodded, before my eyes widened when I realized what she said.

“Wait. Why’s he taking me to London?”

"Well honey I'm going to have to go to your father’s new house in Rome to finalize our divorce and sort out other things as well. Since I'm not sure how long it will take I'm sending you to stay with your brother."

“So, what you’re basically trying to say is that I’ll be spending the whole of summer with Liam?”

“Yes.”

I stood at the entrance of the kitchen, staring at my mother like she had grown two heads.

“You have got to be joking!” I exclaimed.

Don't get me wrong I was happy that I'd be seeing my brother after such a long time. He and I are very close, but after he auditioned for The X Factor for the second time and got put into One Direction we barely got to see each other.

He was always busy touring, promoting, recording and I was busy with my school so we hadn't seen each other for months. We occasionally spoke on the phone or skyped once in a blue moon.

But this wasn’t my problem. All the months of planning where we would we go for summer and what we’d do with my friends just went down the drain. I had been looking forward to summer so bad, especially since this was the summer just before I had to start applying for uni. Once I got into university, I knew I would barely get time to meet my friends.

Another factor that my mother had seemed to miss was that I would be living with four hormonal teenage boys, five including my brother, spending every breathing moment around them. And do I even need to begin with how unhygienic and messy teenage boys were?

Hey, I’m not claiming to be some OCD, cleanliness freak, but I was a girl and you never know what boys could leave lying around…

"Why can't I just stay here? I'm almost 18 and I can take care of myself!” I said to my mother.

"I know darling, but you have to understand that I might be in Rome during your entire vacation and I don't want to keep on worrying about what's happening over here."

"But mum! I already have plans with my friends. I can't just ditch them. Plus these are teenage pop stars that I’m going to live with. You do know that they tend to throw wild parties and sometimes hire exotic dancers?” I said, trying to make a point.

“They aren’t like that. They’re all very nice, decent lads. You’re brother’s there too, he’ll make sure things don’t get out of hand,” she said, not willing to budge.

Ugh, she was so stubborn!

“You have panic attacks when I stay over at Caleb or Dylan’s place for ONE night and you’ve known then since they were in kindergarten!” I pointed out. She was being completely unfair.

"That’s enough Emma, I'm sure your friends will understand that this is a family emergency ", she said, ignoring what I said about Caleb and Dylan.

"But MUM! It’s not fai-"

"Emma, you’re going with your brother for the summer and that’s final!” she yelled, losing her patience.

I let out a huff which earned me a glare from my unreasonable mother. I looked at the clock and realised that school was going to start in 20 minutes. With all this arguing, time definitely flew by.

I shook my head in annoyance before I ran up the stairs grabbed my bag, phone and sprinted to the door. On my way out, I quickly grabbed an apple, digging my teeth into it.

"Bye honey! Have a nice day!” I heard my mother call out in a sweet voice as I shut the door behind me, her anger from minutes ago, gone.

I rolled my eyes. My day was going to be anything BUT nice as I was going to have to explain to my friends why I wouldn't be spending my summer vacation with them. Explaining this to Emily, my best friend, would be the worst as she was equally as stubborn and unreasonable as my mother.

Today was going to be a very LONG day.
