I sat on the blue, plastic chair nervously while my leg bounced up and down. There were five other chairs, and five other people sitting on them. Cece was on my right, and then there were three other people I didn’t know. Dr. Reynolds was sitting in a black, swirley chair. I felt slight jealously towards him. Why did he get to sit in a nice chair while we sat on the cold, easily breakable ones?
“Alright everyone, we have someone new in the group.” He said and all eyes turned to me. I mentally cursed at him. “Would you like to introduce yourself?” He asked.
I sighed and shrugged my shoulders. “I’m Kylie.” Was all I said. What else was there to say?
No one said anything back and I was fine with that. This group therapy session was going to be interesting. “Alright, how is everyone doing today?” Dr. Reynolds asked while he scanned his eyes across the room.
There were murmurs that couldn’t be heard from everyone. I was beginning to wonder how Dr. Reynolds was so patient. I took my time to look over who was sitting in front of me. I had never seen them before, which was to be expected because I had usually stayed within my little group.
The girl to my left had very thin, frail, blond hair that hung just below her shoulders. Her skin was pale and she was quite thin. She was wearing a short sleeved shirt and a pair of shorts. On her legs it looked as if she had picked at several mosquito bites, leaving countless scars. She was sitting with one of her legs on the chair while her arms hugged it.
The girl next to her seemed perfectly normal to me. She had short black hair and seemed to be a perfect weight. Her skin was clean from scars and she was even a little tan.
Finally, another girl sat to Cece. She was a little shorter than I was, and looked quite small. Her long brown hair hung over her face and the whole time Dr. Reynolds talk she would keep her stare down at the ground. She had a few wrist bands covering her wrists, so I guessed she was hiding something under them.
“Janelle, would you like to start off today?” Dr. Reynolds asked, cutting off my thoughts.
I looked to the girl he was motioning towards and my eyes landed on the normal looking one. She gave him a slight smile and shrugged. “I’m happy to be getting out of here next week, but I don’t know if I can handle it.” She said.
“And why is that?” Dr. Reynolds asked.
Janelle sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. “A lot of my friends party. I feel like I’m going to give in and drink.” She admitted.
She was in there for drinking, something I would have never guessed just by looking at her. “I wouldn’t have to worry, Janelle. You’ve gone so long without it and you’re so strong, you just have to believe in yourself.” The girl with the scars on her legs said.
