In the heavy rain, Shancai stood with Daoming Si blocking her path, looking so much like a deer caught in the headlights. "Let's go home," Daoming Si said in a concerned tone as he took in Shancai's drenched form. At these words, Shancai's heart gave a sharp pang, and oh how badly she wanted to follow him.

Please Daoming Si, you have to move, I can't look at you in the eye. My resolve may break. Shancai thought as he stared her down, steeling herself to say goodbye to the man who captivated her heart.

"I can't see you anymore." As she told him why, the Daoming heir felt rage surge through his body at his mother. For as long as he could remember, she'd treated him and Zhuang-jie more like a couple of fucking puppets than her children. How dare she try to tear him and the love of his life apart?! "I'll go talk to her" he said, turning toward the Daoming mansion, ready to engage in a heated confrontation with Daoming Feng. But before he could take a step further, he felt Shancai wrap her arms around his midsection, halting him in his tracks. Over the sound of the pounding rain, he heard her yell "Don't! I've decided to have nothing to do with Daoming family. I've decided not to contact you!" It'll be easier for you, a clean break. You have to let me go and move on, Shancai added in her thoughts. As she turned to grab her luggage and run, Ah Si whipped around and cried in a hurt voice "I can't accept that! You're leaving me for such a lousy reason! Do you really think I'm a useless guy? Have you ever thought of me as a worthy guy?"

Shancai choked back tears and bit her lip to stop herself from saying what she wanted to say. She wanted him to know that she thought of him as an innocent, kind and gentle man. Though she had once despised him, now she found that having to leave him was one of the hardest things she'd ever do. However, what came out of her mouth was "No, not even once." Silence. She didn't turn around to see if he'd heard her. "I should go now" she said, trying desperately to keep a neutral tone, thankful that the heavy rain masked her tears. Grabbing the handle of her suitcase, she began to walk away, but before she'd taken more than a few steps, she felt a hand wrap around her small wrist. Forced to turn around, she was met with a hurt expression on Daoming Si's face, and even in the rain, she could see that tears were threatening to spill over.

"I know you're lying," he said in a broken voice. She flinched, her eyes darting away from his burning gaze. Damn him for seeing through me "Look me in my eye and say that again. Do it and I'll let you go." he continued as he hooked a finger under her chin, forcing her to look him in the eye. Shancai begun to hyperventilate as her emotions became much too overwhelming. It was all too much, and she began to sob, and out came the word vomit. "You're right. I was lying. The truth is that I've thought of you as worthy man for a long time. You can see right through me and have been at my side when I most needed someone there. You've been so kind and good to me, even though I pushed you away so many times. But I have to go. I can't let Qinghe, Xiaoyou, and their families suffer because of me." At that moment, Shancai slumped to the ground in tears, feeling utterly defeated as whatever strength she had left fled from her body. So much for being the undying weed, she thought as she continued to weep.

Without a word, Daoming Si kneeled down and scooped Shancai up. "W-what are you doing? I told you I need to leave." she hiccuped as he carried her bridal style toward his car. "Stupid girl, as if I could let you go after all this," he said as he deposited her in the passenger seat. After he'd swiftly put her luggage in the trunk, he slid into the driver's seat and looked over at Shancai. It seemed she was in shock, as she'd made no move to buckle up or to attempt to escape the car. Ah Si leaned over to her, deciding to buckle her up himself. Seeing him lean so close to her seemed to startled Shancai back to life. His face is too close to mine. She felt her heart give a nervous squeeze and her cheeks heat up. "Since you won't do it, I'll buckle you in. I almost lost you tonight, and I'll be damned if something were to happen," he said, his sweet, warm breath blowing directly into Shancai's face, overwhelming her senses and sending her thoughts into a tailspin. All she could do was stupidly nod, unable to form words. Finally he leaned away, and Shancai felt a small nip of disappointment. She had been expecting (and hoping for) his kiss. Get a grip, he must be hurting after what you said. Sure, she had revealed what she really thought about him, but the seed of doubt had already been planted.

They remained in silence as Ah Si sped down the highway, in the direction of a hotel. Once they arrived, they quickly checked in, and headed to their room. Once inside, Ah Si finally broke the silence. "We'll stay here tonight, and we'll figure something out. Just stay at my side. I can't lose you, Dong Shancai. I love you." Shancai's face felt like it was on fire, and her eyes began to pool with tears, this time of happiness. Daoming Si loves her back? She'd known she was in love with him, but something had been holding her back from saying it aloud. Now, she could confidently say it. Swallowing, she looked him directly in the eye and said those words that had always been dancing on the tip of her tongue.
"I love you, too, Daoming Si"

I actually said it! Shancai thought with glee. Looking at her lover, she believed in him when he said they'd figure it out together. And she was ready to face whatever was thrown their way, as long as she had him by her side.
