Chapter 16: Unbearable

Four days have passed and I've barely moved. I've just stared blankly at the wall. I've only gotten up to use the toilet. I feel too weak to write anymore. I just sit on the bed, staring at the wall. I've given up on trying. I mean, what's the point?

I've barely even eaten. I just want this story of hurt to end. Is that so much to ask?

My calf is wrapped now but it still kind of aches. Stupid fucking dog.

I hear the click of the door unlocking, but I don't even bother to look. It takes a second to figure out its Trinity, but my eyes don't leave the wall.

"How are you feeling?" She asks, making her way across the room towards me. I give her no reply, and remain motionless. I feel her sit beside me. We just sit there in silence for a long while.

Then in a monotone voice, I slowly say, "If I'm dead, won't that fulfill your task of revenge?"

She takes a bit to reply.

"Yeah... Probably."

"Then can I?" I feel her eyes fall on me. "Die, I mean."

Silence engulfs the room.

"You want to die?" She asks, it's almost like it strains her voice.

"Yes."

I feel her hand wrap around mine, and I finally look at her. In the smallest voice I've ever heard her use, she whispers, "I understand that. I'm sorry we drove you to this."

"I can forgive you..." I trail off. "If you help me die." The words almost have no meaning on my tongue. She looks awkwardly around the room, and eventually finds my eyes again.

"We can-" her voice catches and she coughs. "go up to the roof."

I nod at her, finally accepting my fate.

*.*.*

I follow her up some stairs, limping, down a hall, then up another stairway. She tries helping me, but I push her off. We then come across a door and finally I see a sign above that says, "ROOF".

Trinity pushes open the door and I see the sky. A beautiful sky. The sun is setting. What a way to go.

Trinity moves out of the way as I start towards the ledge. I climb onto the ledge, looking into sky. I've never thought of committing suicide. I've always had a pretty alright life up until my mom died. But even then, I knew I would get by. I can't survive here. I'd rather die from my own hand then give these people the satisfaction. My mom's dead, Nate's dead, Trinity's sister is dead, hell, even that dog is dead. Everything's dying.

"What was her name?" I ask, staring down at the distance between the ground and me. "Your sister."

"Her name was Raven," Trinity replies.

"That's a pretty name."

"She was a pretty person." The wind picks up, running through my hair. I take out the hair tie, letting my hair fall on my shoulders. I toss the hair tie over the edge, watching as it falls to the ground below. The wind starts whipping my hair around my face, but it feels good. Almost as if I'm already free. "She was such a bright person, so full of life, a little mischievous." I hear her smiling. "Every problem I ever had, I went to her. She always understood me better than anyone else could, she made me feel important; always knew exactly what to say to make the situation bearable." I hear her crying now, and her voice is shaky. "I loved her so much. She was my only sister." Her sobs bring tears to my eyes. "Why did she have to leave me here?" She's screaming now. "No one in this family gets me! They don't know what I've been through! But she did!" A tear trails down my face. My father wrecked this family. "She knew exactly who I was..."

"I'm sorry," is all I can say. We stand there in silence, me on the ledge, her standing a safe distance away. I wipe the tears from my eyes, staring at the pink sky. Will I find my mom when I'm gone? Will she understand why I did it? Will she still love me, even knowing I gave up?

"Are you going to do it?" She asks. Her voice sounds distant.

I take a deep breath, and I step forward, lingering my foot over the edge. The world is frozen. This moment will be my last. Then I'm free. Free of the monsters, free of the horrors of life. I'll be done. This is it. The end.

A loud creak breaks through the silence, making me jolt backwards. I whip around, eyes blazing.

"Catherine! What are you doing?" He shouts. Trinity looks between me and him, eyes wide. I blink at him blankly. I cant seem to process the situation. It takes me a minute to say his name out loud.

"Nate?"
