Jiyeon leaned her head against the passenger seat window of the car, breathing out a sigh of exhaustion.
"Honey? Are you okay?" Her mother asked. Although she couldn't see the expression of concern on her face, she could hear it in her voice.
To be honest..she didn't know if she was okay. All she knew was that she was tired. Beyond tired. She hardly had the motivation to answer her. In fact, she didn't.
"Jiyeon-ah..." Her mother continued. "You know your father and I aren't upset about your decision, right? It's perfectly normal for kids to drop out of college. Sometimes better opportunities lie outside of school. I know you wanted to make us proud-"
"I'm not upset about that eomma, believe me. I'm just tired, okay? I just want to nap. It's late." She responded, pointing to the clock on the dashboard. 12:35 a.m.
She definitely wasn't upset about dropping college. Sure, she felt bad at first since she wanted to graduate to make her parents happy, but that was the problem. She was doing it for them, not for herself. She didn't know what she wanted to do, but it definitely wasn't college. She felt so alone and depressed there. It felt good to get out. Still..sometimes she felt like a failure for giving up so easily. She had only just finished her second year when she decided it wasn't for her. She had to find an alternative, and fast. All she did was give up all the time. She was getting sick of herself for it.
A stray piece of brown hair blocked the vision in her left eye. She blew some air from her lips, causing the hair to flutter to the side. The cool air conditioning blowing on her face combated this motion, sending it falling back over her eye. Fed up, she closed her eyes, deciding to just sleep now. There was still a few hours until they arrived back home. Hopefully she could sleep all the way through the ride. The gentle pitter patter of rain against the car window did wonders in lulling her straight to sleep.
She probably would've slept quite peacefully if it weren't for the next few events that occurred.
There was no rude awakening, no sudden cry or loud sound, she just opened her eyes out of nowhere, feeling completely awake. Something felt off....
"Eomma?"
"Hm?"
"I don't know, I just-"
Out of nowhere, a pair of headlights appeared in front of the car, barreling straight toward them. They were on a two lane back road in the middle of nowhere. There were no other cars in sight, yet suddenly one was in the wrong lane, coming straight toward them.
"EOMMA!"
The next few events were a blur. Her mother didn't hesitate to jerk the steering wheel to the right, attempting to pull off the road in a quick manner. The car that had been coming toward them clipped the back end of their car, and out of what Jiyeon assumed was panic, her mother's foot slammed against the gas, sending them straight in to a tree. Her head slammed against the dashboard and everything went black.
She didn't know how long she was out.
When she woke up, she was still in the car. She lifted her head from the dashboard, groaning at the crippling pain in her skull. "Ah." She lifted her hand to her head, feeling something warm and wet on her forehead. Blood. "Shit.." She hissed. Her vision was still fuzzy and her head was reeling. Likely the only thing keeping her up was adrenaline. There were no police cars, in fact there were no other cars around. Even more alarming, though, was the fact that her mother's body was missing from the driver's seat. There wasn't any body sized hole in the windshield, only large cracks where it had collided with the tree. Her door was still closed as well.
