The Letter

Peggy ran into the house, waving a letter above her head. "The war is over! THE WAR IS OVER!!" You put your finger to your lips as you poked your head out from your room and crept down the stairs. You wrapped your arms around Peggy's waist and lifted her up, spinning her around in the air. She laughed and hugged you. "Our boys are coming home!" she whispered loudly. The two of you crept upstairs into Eliza's room, where she had fallen asleep, her newborn son, Phillip, nestled in her arms. You gently nudged her shoulder. She yawned and opened her eyes slowly.

"Eliza?"

"Hm?" she mumbled sleepily.

"The war is over! The boys are coming home!"

"Wonderful.." Eliza sighed and leaned back in her rocking chair, her eyes fluttering closed. You looked at Peggy and the two of you left the room, leaving the new mother to rest.

Peggy handed you an envelope. "By the way, you got this letter from your sweetheart." Your eyes widened and you snatched the letter from her hand, your cheeks pink. "No thank you?" called Peggy as you ran upstairs to your room, frantically tearing open the letter. It fell open on the floor and you picked it up, hands trembling.

My darling (Y/N),

As you may already know, the war has ended and we will be returning home soon. I have been in South Carolina fighting against the British troops alongside my newly liberated African brothers. Unfortunately, I have injured my leg while fighting, and although I am free to leave, I must stay and wait for my leg to properly heal before making the long journey home. By the time you receive this letter, my leg will be healed and I will be starting or may have already started the travel back to the people I love. I yearn for the moment that we may embrace once again.

With love and anticipation,                                                                                                                                                 John Laurens

Your eyes watered and held the flat sheet against your chest, your heart engulfed with happiness. "H-He misses me," you breathed, your eyes alight with adoration. "He misses ME!" You spun around with contentment and promptly tripped on your dress, causing you to fall rather heavily on the polished wood flooring.

You winced and sat up, rubbing your bruised behind. Angelica, who had been out, burst into your room. "Are you okay? What happened?" You smiled and placed your hands on the bed, using it as an aid to stand.

"I'm fine, but look what I got!" You handed the now crumpled letter to Angelica, who smoothed it out and read it, her eyes flitting quickly over the handwritten message. She looked up, surprised, and you nodded excitedly.

"(Y/N)...That's amazing!" Angelica cried, pulling you into a warm embrace. You squeezed her tightly and sighed happily. She held you at arm's length and continued. "Alex, Burr, Lafayette, and Hercules are due to arrive in a week, so John will most likely return.." She furrowed her brow and counted on her fingers. "..in a month, at most." Your face fell at the thought of waiting for so long to see your beloved, but you reminded yourself that it wasn't that long in the grand scheme of things.

Soon enough, Alexander and his companions returned from the war. You were introduced to Burr and his wife Theodosia, along with their newborn daughter, Theodosia ll. It was amusing to see how different Burr and Hamilton behaved with their children. It was clear Burr was going to be a caring, loving father, while Hamilton, on the other hand...was going to be a very proud one.

Although you knew that John wasn't returning for at least another 3 weeks, that didn't stop you from waiting by the window (WAVING THROUGH A WINDOW OOOOOOOOH, CAN ANYBODY SEE, IS ANYONE WAVIIIIIING BACK AT MEEEEEEEE?) every day, hoping to see him walking down the street. In your spare time, you talked with your best friends and played with little baby Phillip and Theo. Nevertheless, the thought of John still lingered at the back of your mind.

The horses trotted merrily across the rough road and John looked out the window. "I'm coming home, (Y/N)," he thought, "I'm coming home."

HELLO MY DUDES (and dudettes and ppl who don't identify as either👍)

I'm trying.

Life sucks.

School is hard.

But I'm doing okay.

As you can probably tell, my updates won't be as quick as when I started the story, but they're coming.

Also, I'm gonna do a Q&A because why not?

Comment your questions below and I'll try to answer them at the end of the next chapter.

PLEASE do not message me your questions, I don't want them coming from two different places. It's just more organized that way.

I will see all y'all later.
