Summer’s heart pounded as she flattened herself against the corner she just ran around. The course cold bricks dug into her shoulders and arms where the yellow singlet she was wearing didn’t cover. Closing her mouth in a frail effort to quieten her breathing, Summer strained her ears trying to hear signs of her pursuer, but could only hear her own pulse. It was racing so hard, she was sure there was a heard of stampeding horses living in her chest.
Summer would have pushed off from the wall and ran some more, except her legs refused to move. The only hope in survival lay in remaining undetected. That hope was failing fast. Distant footsteps could be heard as shoes made contact with the pavement, they weren’t slowing down and they were coming straight for her. Pleading for any of the Gods to hear and help, Summer, slowed her breathing and tried to quieten the galloping horses which had taken up residence inside her chest. This is not how Summer had wanted her night to go! Feeling her knees growing weaker with each distant step, Summer spread her hands and grabbed a fist full of bricks in an effort to hold herself up. All the attempt gained her though, was scraped and bloodied fingers.
Turning her face to the side and pressing her body into the bricks behind her as much as she cold, Summer cursed her ample breasts which refused to be inconspicuous. Focusing on her chest, Summer forced her body to rise and fall slowly. If she could slow her breathing, then perhaps the horses would leave her chest and the blood pounding in her ears would stop.
An eternity later, Summer finally succeeded in appearing less noticeable. Almost breathing a sigh in relief, Summer stopped herself just in time, as she strained to listen for the footsteps. She couldn’t hear anything. Maybe she had managed to remain unnoticed. Lifting her eyes, Summer heard herself gasp as she started into the face of her stalker. As the horses commenced their stampede, Summer noticed the pale skin of the man standing beside her. Fear gripped her , causing her to stutter as she spoke. “What do you want?” ‘Stupid question!’ Summer’s mind screamed at her as the man before her parted his lips in a smile revealing two sharp, white fangs. “You know what I want.” His voice purred.
Terror drenched every part of her as Summer’s brain tried frantically to think of what it was this vampire wanted and why he thought she would know. Forcing her unresponsive legs to work, Summer pushed off from the wall and tried to run, only to be stopped as a cold hard hand grabbed her upper arm and pulled her back. Summer’s legs would have refused to hold her up if two strong hands weren’t grabbing her upper arms keeping her upright.
“Please?” Summer pleaded, not sure if she was pleading for death or release.
Something seemed to snap inside the vampire. His dark eyes looked anguished as he snarled. Before Summer could register what was happening, he had his teeth on her shoulder and was biting down. Feeling the sharp sudden pain, Summer felt a scream tear through her throat.
Sitting up in bed and panting heavily, Summer looked around her room and seemed to relax a little when she realised she was in her bedroom. “Only a dream.” She panted. ”It was just a dream.” Glancing down at her hands, Summer uttered a curse. Her fingers were scraped and bloody. Ripping the singlet aside, Summer gaped at the bite mark waiting for her on her shoulder.
