Hello, my name is Jack Johnston, I live in Orange County, California. I am 14 years old and I have rod monochromatism, which is a very rare form of color deficiency, affecting 1 of 30,000 people. Rod monochromats have no functioning cones of any kind and therefore can be described as truly color blind. As a result, I see the world in shades of grey. Going deeper into what I have to do every day with this deficiency is that in a room that would be considered illuminated for normal people with intact cone systems, a rod monochromat will find it too bright. That's why I have to wear glasses indoors.
Let's talk more about what a normal day is for me. I have to wake up at 5:30 am, change and go upstairs to eat breakfast. School starts at 7:00 am, now you are wondering why does he wake up so early? Well, because I eat so slow. After I finally finish eating I get my backpack and get in the car. I have to be ready at 6:50 with my shoes on, a jacket and my phone.
School is very rough, almost nobody likes me instead of one person that is also colorblind, Gavin. He has rod monochromatism, the same as me, and we both see the world the same way. I haven't had a best friend in my whole life until I moved to Orange County. Anyway, in school, Gavin and I get bullied all the time when I say all the time I mean that the people have done it so much that we are already used to it. Its always the same thing, or they punch us, push us, or trip us.
The thing I don't like is that they don't call us by our names. They call us "Monochromats" or "Things". That's what really bothers me, but besides that, I can handle it. When school finishes is way more fun though. We don't have to deal with anybody and we can do our job, I haven't talked about this yet but Gavin and I have a job, the name of our company is "Trash Boys", pretty lame but we couldn't think of anything better. Now, I'm going to explain how our company works. We get a call from somebody that wants its trash to be taken away, but our deal is that if we find something in the trash that we want, we can keep it.
Our routine is that after school we go to Gavin's house and we wait to get a call there, we usually only get 1 call a week, but it's worth the wait. Finally, the phone starts ringing, when I pick up the phone is someone anonymous. He tells me his address and then goes on to say that he won't be home, before hanging up he warns us to not touch anything else that is not trash. Very sketchy, but we agree.
