A Battle for Britain

5th August 1940

A sole plane breaks through the gathering clouds and flies towards land and its jutting white cliffs, a flagship to maybe one hundred more, which follow closely behind.

Appearing from the green patchwork below there come pockets of maybe a dozen Royal Air Force fighter planes, which engage the attacking force.

The German fighter escorts break away to face their British counterparts as the Junker 88 bombers continue on their path.

Soon the pack of Spitfires and Hurricanes are swarmed by the German fighters, one of them banks hard to the left but takes two of the German planes with him, close on his tail the pilot spirals his Spitfire down towards the sea in an attempt to lose them, he pulls up just in time but soon realizes that his pursuers are not going to let him go that easily, they fly full throttle just above the surface towards the white cliffs.

The planes corkscrew through the skies in a deadly hunt as they weave, rise and fall in a synchronised dance.

The spitfire pulls to the right and up into the shadows created by the squadron of bombers which like a dark cloud have blocked out the summer sun.

The Spitfire heads straight towards the centre of this cloud driven by a cocktail of adrenaline, naivety and desperation, which stirs a potion of reckless courage.

He spins to avoid the fire from the fighters still on his tail and at the same time unleashing a volley of bullets onto the under belly’s of the bombers.

He straightens just before contact to slide through a momentary gap, so close that for a split second he can see the faces of the gunners in the nearest plane, before breaking into the blinding sunshine.

His pursuers try to follow but by this time the gap has disappeared they smash straight into two bombers exploding on impact and causing a supernova of fuel, metal and fire which grows as the following planes, too close to avoid it join the carnage.

The Spitfire flies above the bombers, he dives down unleashing a hail of fire along the length of the rearmost bomber, puncturing the fuselage and tearing the tail into pieces causing the nose of the plane to dip and tumble out of the sky.

The British pilot now sets his sights on a dog fight he can see in the distance.
