It was another boring and calm day in the second-floor classroom of Northwood High.
Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a drowsy haze over the room. I lifted my head from my desk, a sigh escaping my lips, and that's when I saw her. She stood awkwardly by the doorway, clutching a worn backpack.
Her black, curly hair framed a face adorned with oversized glasses, and her petite stature made her seem even younger than the rest of us.I quickly put my head down again, feigning disinterest, but my ears perked up when I heard her soft voice.
"Hi, my name is Yukino," she announced to the class.
"Hm?" I couldn't help but lift my head again, curiosity piqued. Up close, she looked even cuter than I initially thought. Her cheeks were flushed a delicate pink, and her eyes held a mixture of nervousness and excitement.
"I'm new," she added, a shy smile gracing her lips.
"Yeah, I have eyes... I saw that you're new," I retorted, my usual sarcasm masking my growing interest.
Suddenly, a group of girls materialized beside Yukino, their voices cutting through the air. "Yukino-san, leave her alone. Come with us," one of them commanded, her tone laced with a hint of disdain.
"Eh?" Yukino looked at me, her brows furrowed in concern. "Can she come too?" she asked, her voice surprisingly firm. The other girl scoffed, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Y-Yukino-san, S-suki always lives in her world. Leave her alone and come with us."
But Yukino stood her ground. "But I want to stay with her." She turned back to me, her smile returning. "Let's be friends."
Her words caught me off guard. I was surprised, even a little flustered. I looked down, my cheeks burning. "Why do you want to be friends with someone like me?" I mumbled, my voice barely above a whisper."Because I don't know you," she replied simply. "I want to get to know you better."
"That's stupid," I thought to myself, rolling my eyes. "Whatever," I said aloud, trying to maintain my indifferent facade.
Undeterred, she smiled and took the empty seat beside me. "What's your name?" she asked, her voice brimming with genuine curiosity.
I glared at her, a sigh escaping my lips. "Suki," I replied curtly. She looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to elaborate.
"No, I don't have a last name," I clarified, my voice flat.
"Ah! ...Me neither," she exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise. Then, a wide smile spread across her face.
"Why does she smile so much?" I wondered, a hint of annoyance creeping into my thoughts. Then, it hit me. "Wait, you don't have a last name?"
"Mhm," she confirmed, nodding her head.
"Oh! I see." I put my head down, a strange feeling stirring within me.
A moment of silence passed between us, and then I felt a gentle touch on my head. She was patting my hair, a soft, comforting gesture.
"Hm?" I looked up, my eyes meeting hers. "What?"
"Hm? Nothing," she replied, her smile widening. "I just wanted to pat your head all of a sudden."
I couldn't help but crack a small smile. "You're so weird," I said, shaking my head. I turned away, gazing out the window, trying to hide the warmth spreading through my chest. She giggled. "I know."
Just then, the bell rang, signaling the start of class.
"Talk to you later," she said, getting up and heading to her assigned seat.
