Just like that night I spent in the prison cell, I had trouble sleeping. Dinner had been quiet, maybe because of the whole Adam seeing my hair thing. I was grateful for that actually ,because I could drown in my own thoughts about what Rowan was going to do tomorrow. I kept tossing and turning in my bed, but thankfully I was on a sort of bed and not in a prison cell waiting to be prosecuted, so I slept better this time. The plan was to meet 9 AM. I was up anyway at 7-ish I think ( who knew the time?) and did my morning routine quickly. I was relieved to shower again and get dressed in a pair of Rohesia's dresses. I had told her my packed dresses got a little dusty from all the travelling so I would have to wash them, but from the way she had just looked at me oddly and nodded before handing me her dress, I had to up my game or gtfo here soon.So after showering, washing my hair ,'brushing' my teeth with that paste stuff and getting dressed, I rushed downstairs to get breakfast done with. Rohesia and Adam were already sitting and talking among themselves. I stepped down from the stairs and quietly announced myself, not wanting to have too much of a conversation.
"Good Morning", I greeted, sitting beside Rohesia. She and Adam immediately stopped talking and looked taken aback for a moment by my presence. They quickly recovered and greeted me back. Rohesia jumped up from her chair to serve me breakfast and Adam awkwardly looked into his food. I guessed he was still not over yesterday's incident.
" I hope you are having a pleasant stay, Mrs Cartwright", Rohesia asked cheerfully, placing my plate on the table.
"Oh most certainly", I replied, flashing her a smile," You are very hospitable"
" I am so glad to hear that!", she exclaimed. She and her husband exchanged a glance before she asked me," So how long are you planning to stay when your husband arrives, if you don't mind me asking?"
" We haven't decided yet", I replied shortly, digging into my plate. Adam was giving me furtive glances while Rohesia seemed ill at ease. Something was up. I looked up at her,
"Is something wrong?"
She burst into a wide apologetic smile, waving her hands," No, No!. Why would you think that? Everything's peachy", she laughed,"I just like to know about my guests. I guess I am a busybody haha"
Adam also cracked a smile and nodded his head in agreement with his wife.
" That's fine with me", I laughed with her, slightly relieved." Do let me know if you need anything, Mrs McKenzie", she grinned, leaving for the kitchen.
" I will, thank you!", I shouted from the living room to her. I finished my breakfast and stood up. I estimated that it was nearly 9 now and Rowan would be here any minute. I did not want Adam or Rohesia to see him and think I am having an affair or something, so I quickly smiled at Adam and leaped from the table, walking to the door in long strides. I was just about to go out the door when Adam's voice called out,
" Do you need anything, Mrs McKenzie?", he asked, smiling insincerely," I would be happy to go around the corner to get it for you. It's like a maze out there and you're new, wouldn't want you getting lost"
" No, it's fine", I replied, shortly, not wishing to engage with him. I knew he was fishing for information about where I was going. Rohesia was suspicious enough but this man just crossed all limits, give me a break, would you?. Before I could turn back, he called out again, his attempt at knowing my whereabouts less obvious now,
"Can I ask when you would be coming back? Rohesia would want to know if she should set a plate at lunch for you?", he asked, lamely in my opinion.
This time I did not turn back but only tilted my head slightly to give him some serious side-eye for a second before answering,
