As it turned out, Brock Cameron (a.k.a- "The B-Man") had been moved around quite a bit in his lifetime. True, he just recently made the move from Madison, but that wasn't the origin of his story. Born in Milwaukee, he and his mother moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin when he was 2, then graduated to some small town across the country in Nevada when he was 6. At age 11, he came back across the country to Pennsylvania, until his mother decided to come back to little ol' Wisconsin and settled in Madison at age 15. As he told it, she was there to stay.
For a year anyway. Because he is obviously now here, in Eau Claire. Gods know why.
Incidentally enough, we not only had Chemistry together, but the teacher had placed us at the same lab table. And since it was the first day of school, we did a whole lot of nothing. So Brock and I decided to play the "Get to Know You" version of 20 Questions.
Brock likes chocolate a lot, but he prefers vanilla when speaking of ice cream paired with lots of whipped cream. He plays soccer, and despite moving around a lot, he claims to be a "pretty descent player". He listens to a lot of Indie Rock, but is a also a die-hard country fan, which I never would have guessed. Ever. He's promised to make me a mix of his favorite songs, so long as I make him one in return.
For the new kid, he was pretty social and friendly. It was obvious that he had the newbie role down pat. It was hard for me to get used to- me, the demigod only used to really socializing with other demigods and/or mythical creatures that shouldn't exist. That sociality level was more familiar, but even that is weird sometimes. But talking with Brock made my job as a guide very easy and comfortable.
Second hour was not quite so lucky- he had Algebra 2 while I had Economics- but thrid hour we had Literature together. He sat diagonally behind me this time, and I heard him make light conversation to the boy sitting next to him. But when the teacher ended class with a few minutes left before the bell, he was at my desk and demanding my attention with another story of his.
I had to hand it to the guy, he had a way with words. By lunchtime, I was deeply surprised with myself. Brock had easily climbed up the list of people I had the longest conversations with, standing only behind my mother, Nico and Casey. And although his company was very enjoyable, I knew exactly where to put him for lunch.
"Arguably, Tim Drake was the best Robin." Brock said with confidence from behind me as we weaved through the lunch line.
I was shaking my head before he even finished the statement. "Nobody beats Dick Grayson- he was the best Robin!" I argued. (He got me on the topic of comics... Long story!) "He fit the Batman legacy the best, was even chosen to fill-in for Bruce when he was otherwise preoccupied in the past."
Brock smirked. "Tim was the better leader, though. He wasn't as rebellious as Grayson, or as naive. Besides, two orphans are double trouble."
"Yeah, double trouble for the bad guys." I scoffed. "Grayson was teh better Robin and you know it." I grabbed an apple to complete my lunch and stepped up to pay.
"Well, what about Damien Wayne?" he asked. "True heir to the Wayne enterprise and all."
I sighed, tossing my hair over my shoulder. "He was unwanted and he knew it. Talia dropped him at Bruce's door when she decided he couldn't lead the League of Shadows, and his father took him in because he had no other choice." I paused. "It was practically blackmail."
At Brock's silence, the first in a while, I turned to look at him. He was giving me that look that clearly said, "I'm laughing at you in my head".
I blushed. "Batman is sort of an...obsession of mine." I explained sheepishly.
"Really? I had no idea!" he teased, laughing a little.
