It was morning, yet the sun wasn’t even up. The cold mist surrounded the house, which made me want to stay home even more. I stood at the window looking out, with my coffee in hand, and slowly made my way back to the kitchen where my badge and gun laid. As I gathered my usual things the feeling of dread took over my mind, then I opened up the door and got in the cruiser, and left the horror movie like home. Fleeing down the road, lights and sirens blaring, I turned my rearview mirror on the battered and bloody people in the back seat. Mumbling words, I could not understand, the people looked upon me as for I was their savior. Then out of nowhere,
“The kid!” the women yelled.
“A kid? There was a kid?” I said in horror, as I turned the car and slid perfectly toward the direction of the blood thirsty-“MOM!”
I looked over in the passenger side to find my 7 year old, blonde headed daughter staring at me with worried written all over her face.
“You’ve been sitting here for 10 minutes, just staring!”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I was just thinking. You can go to bed you still have 2 hours until you have to be up.”. The little girl got up and carefully shut the door, tiredly walking back into the house. I started the engine, and then left my driveway.
When I got to the office I soon realized I had to do paperwork today. One hour at a time passed as freedom seemed to be dragging itself towards me. After several hours of overtime, I walked out the iron doors as it slammed shut to my old life an Eagle flew overhead. I turned around just one more time,
"How does it feel to not have to wear orange anymore?" an old friend said with a smirk. I ran straight over to him and gave him a hug.
"So I’m just curious...did you do it?", I started walking to my old car someone had generously brought for me, the key was in the ignition, I got in and started it up, curiously he followed, also getting in the car. I opened up the console to dig out my sunglasses and then put them on. I turned back to John with a smile and said,
"If I didn't do it, who did?" We both began to laugh for we know what happened tha-"Ann!" a familiar face stood looking at me through the window of the car.
“Are you okay?” John said looking at me as if I had gone crazy.
“Yeah, I just zoned out I guess.” John nodded his head and walked away cautiously. I sat in the cruiser for a bit, wondering what was wrong with me. Possibly I needed to get out of this place, I’ve been here all my life.
“Yeah that’s it,” I told myself. I quickly got out of the vehicle keys in hand and walked back into the dreaded building, and straight towards Mr. Johnson’s office. I placed my gun, badge and keys upon his desk.
“I quit.” and turned immediately to the door and left. I heard some mumbles in the background, but I kept walking. I went down the street to the bus stop, when the bus pulled up I was waiting for the people to get off when a strange looking man stared at me as he was getting off. He placed a hand into his coat pocket and pulled out a shiny silver knife to which he placed up against my throat. Then I was on the ground, as I stood up the same man came to help me up.
“People I’ll tell you!” The man seemed angered by someone, maybe the person who pushed me I’m not for sure.
On the way home on the bus, the same horror movie like feeling came over me and then the bus was suddenly on its top. I awaked to screams and fire, but my body was to weak to stand, and so I laid in a pool of blood surrounded by fire. I had to laugh though, I guess I’ll never get out of this town. I took a hold of my daughters hand and tried to explain to her what happened to her father, and soon me. This was the end, I took my last breath just as I heard,
“We have another over here!” but it was to late.
