I pulled in my legs towards my chest, feeling vulnerable and tiny, leaning heavily against the large, cold stone wall around us. I didn't want to say it. Please don't let me say it. It was not part of my plan but it came rolling out like waves crashing on the shore.
"I just don't want you to break my heart, that's all." There, I said it. The very thing that I tried to hide behind a strong, stable interior, out in the open. It felt like my chest was ripped open, every vital organ visible, bloody and exposed. A single, glistening tear dropped from my cheek and fell onto my bare feet. I didn't want to see his face, didn't want to see the surprise that I knew would be etched onto his face, but not being able to help myself, I peeked up from under my eyelashes.
His face was... well his face was nothing as if he felt nothing. Emotionless.
Why does he look like that?
I stared back down at my feet. I shouldn't have said that... I shouldn't have said that...I shouldn't have...
"Get up." His voice was like bells in the silence.
I looked up at him in surprise and confusion. His face glowed in the light that was slowly dimming. My arms were wounded tight around my legs, but they itched to touch his face.
"Get up, please." He said more gently. When I didn't stand up, he took hold of my arm and pulled me up off of the cold ground to face him. My breath caught but before I could say anything, he turned me around so that my back was pressed against his chest.
I looked at the scenery in front of me, still beautifully aware of his hands curving protectively around my body and his face snuggled into my neck. The sunset was a warm welcome on my face and I closed my eyes. Despite the sun, the wind still blew coldly but the cold was not what made me shiver.
"I would choose you over anyone in the world."
