Cloud gazing.

thanks for the idea juliet ily

a song for this chapter - Love - Lana Del Rey

El was always confused over clouds, I mean, they were these giant puff balls almost like cotton candy in the sky, and no matter how much any of the boys tried to explain what clouds were to her, she was mesmerized.

She adored watching them fly by, but never paid them much attention, she'd normally drift off into a dreamy world of her own.

So one day, El voiced her love for the giant clouds seemingly of cotton, and Mike took matters into his own hands.

On a hot July day, Mike took El out on a bike ride, she stood on the back pegs of his bike, and they rode a bit out of Hawkins, a peaceful clearing outside of the chaotic town.

El's hair blew in the wind, as she felt the cool air fly past her, feeling as though if she were a tad lighter, she'd float away with it.

Something about it was so, so, poetic? As if it had been written by Robert Frost, like he wrote the wind into the sky with words, as if a fairy tale.

They arrived to the field, a few dandelions were scattered all over, like little pieces of the sun itself had reached the soil.

Mike laid out a blanket, and sat down on it, and El followed suit. Mike laid down on his back, and examined the whole layout of the sky, many clouds floating in it, not a single one daring to threaten them with a storm.

El inhaled deeply and closed her eyes, laying down on the blanket, she opened her eyes slowly to the blue sky that seemed so close she could touch it.

A light giggle escaped from her lips, as she smiled brightly, seeing such a beautiful sight in front of her, she seemingly forgot her entire past.

She began to realize that clouds took different shapes, but one she saw, made her squint a bit, as she looked at it, it was, weird.

"Mike, what type of shape is that?" El asked, pointing up at it.

"That's a heart, El."

"A heart?"

"Yeah, like, a heart means different things, like, a heart could mean l-love, or like, everybody has a heart in their chest, it keeps them alive." he explained sweetly, glancing over to see her still watching the sky, absorbing his words with complete wonder.

She pointed to his chest.

"So, you have a h-heart?" she asked, her brown eyes growing wide.

"Yeah, if you listen closely, you'll hear it beating." he said.

So El instinctively laid her head on his chest, listening to the thumping of his heart.

Strangely enough, when she got closer to him, she heard his heart start beating faster, faster and faster.

"Mike, are you okay?" she asked, looking at his face, which was still facing the sky, but had turned a rosy colour.

"Yeah, why?" he asked, chuckling in a slightly embarrassed way.

"Your heart, it, it got faster."

"Y-yeah, a heart does that when you're nervous, or scared, or for Dustin, when you run at all."

This earned him a giggle.

"Well then, why did your heart get faster?"

"Well, 'cause, you. You're the reason it beats, El."

Her face turned beet red, and she smiled so brightly he thought she might outshine the sun and the stars combined.

"Well if it makes you feel any better, Mike, my heart does that too, when you're around." she giggled, looking back up at the clouds.

Was this a lie? No. not at all.

In fact, the first time this happened to El was 1983, when Mike called her pretty. She thought she was dying because her heart began to thump loudly in her chest, the sound echoing, she thought she was dying, and as if Mike could probably hear it, too.

And don't get me started on the Snowball.

El was already frightened enough at the view ahead of her, a gymnasium filled with faces of people she didn't know, and she felt like all eyes were on her, but as she scanned the place, she saw Mike, and boy oh boy, her heart beat 1000 times per second, if that were even possible. Dreams were coming true in front of her very own two eyes, and she was excited, nervous, happy, and one other emotion.

Love.

As they danced, her heart only seemed to get quicker, and when they kissed, it was the fastest she thought it could ever go.

She smiled to herself at the thought of it, at the thought of Mike, the way he made her who she was today. The way he kept her heart beating not at a steady pace, but kept it beating.

And Mike smiled to himself too, of course, when he said his heart beat for her, he seriously meant it.

His heart skipped a beat when they met, something strange was in the air, some peculiar electric force that had drawn them to meet, by pure fate, by luck.

Well, if it was luck that Mike could've met El, he thought he was pretty damn lucky.

At any given time, she was beautiful. Wig or no wig, fancy or not, the way her eyes filled with absolute wonder when he taught her something new, or the small smile that used to form on her lips, he found everything about her beautiful.

So it was no wonder his heart fluttered around her, and that he felt complete when she was with him, when their hands were intertwined.

He would kill to have it stay this way.

So they both monitored their heartbeats thumping in their chests as they watched the clouds dance in the sky, so methodically, so perfect.

Oh, the joys of being young, and in love.
