Prologue

1981

The pain he was feeling wasn't even comparable to anything he had ever felt before. His girlfriend was famous, which he was so happy about. She deserved it and it just so happened that a big record exec happened to be in the karaoke bar when she got up and belted out Janis Joplin's Piece of my Heart. He gave her a record deal on the spot and after spewing out hits like Landslide, Rhiannon, and Gold Dust Woman he knew she had made her mark on the music industry while he sat and wrote. Sure, he played guitars, and she had begged him to be her guitarist but when he tried, her label put a stop to that immediately. That's not even what hurt the most. What hurt was that while he was going to school, he had gone back to college and gotten a degree in English and History and now was teaching, she was off traveling the world being a megastar. Who just so happened to be seeing Don Henley on the side.

As he was leaving school, a steamy duet between the pair had been released as her next single from the album and he came home to the two of them having sex in their bed. Don had been kicked out and as he was packing his things, utterly angry, hurt, and dejected she was sobbing in the sheets.

"Lindsey, I am so sorry! Please, it won't happen again." She begged.

He just shook his head and left their beautiful two-story home. He moved into a small apartment before being transferred to San Francisco, he went back home and taught and watched from the outside as the woman he had planned on marrying made it big and suffered from multiple addictions and men.
