As soon as the Jenny Haniver was safely out of range of Speedwell's rockets, Anna Fang had become all smiles and kindness. While her sister set the Jenny on course she had set about finding Tom a warm fleece lined jacket and fixing him up a bed in the hold. Speaking of her sister, he got the feeling that Raven didn't like him very much. From the moment he boarded her airship, she had shown great kindness and welcome to Hester while she was very cold and distant to Tom. "Give her time, she'll come 'round" Anna had said. Well she sure didn't seem to be coming around. The other night Anna had surprised him by asking him about London. When he didn't answer any of her questions she simply left him alone and didn't mention it the next day, but it had put him off slightly none the less. But later he put it off as simple curiosity. After breakfast, Tom decided to look in on Hester to see how she was doing, only to find her sound asleep. The Londoner was so wrapped up in his thoughts he didn't hear or see Anna walking to stand beside him. "Raven gave her something for the pain," Anna said softly. "YAH!" Tom yelled and turned to face the young Easterner who was chuckling quietly.
"She'll sleep for hours but you needn't fear for her," came a second voice, behind him. He yelled again and turned to see Raven standing behind him, grinning like a Cheshire cat. "Great Quirke!" he gasped, "What is it with you girls and sneaking up on people! You nearly gave me a heart attack!"
"Well you are easy to scare," Raven said plainly. Anna sent her younger sister a stern look. Tom sighed and turned his attention back to Hester's face. Somehow he had expected her to look a little better now that she had been cleaned and fed, and had her wound bandaged, but she was still as hideous as ever. "He made a mess of her your wicked Valentine, poor girl," Rave said sadly leading him back to the flight deck as Anna made her way out to the observation platform to drink her coffee. Tom felt uneasy being alone with Raven Fang, and he nervously eyed the knife in her tall boot and the pistol in the holster on her thigh. Raven, seeing this, grinned to herself, "Good," she thought, "I make him nervous." You see it wasn't that she totally dislike Tom, sometimes she found him quite charming, but even if Anna genuinely liked him, to Raven he was on the Jenny to deliver info. Anna had told her she had been unsuccessful in getting him to reveal anything about London, but one thing she had learned about her sister during their time together, she was sometimes too gentle. She decided to be a bit rougher on Tom, not mean, but a bit rougher none the less. After all, he had put up with Hester Shaw all right, and she was one of the roughest people Raven had ever met. Yes she was quite fond of Hester. She was drawn from her thoughts by arriving at the flight deck. "Wait! How do you know about Valentine?" Tom asked as he sat down in the copilot's seat.
"Oh everyone knows about the great Thaddeus Valentine!" the black haired girl said. "What do you know about him?" Tom asked. Raven grinned to herself again, she was beginning to like this city boy. She answered, "Well I know he's London's greatest historian and I also know that that's just a cover for his real work; as Crome's secret agent!" She said, grinning for real this time. "But that's not true!" Tom cried indignantly still keen to defend his ex-hero. "Poor Tom," the aviatrix thought, "so blind to all the lies, so desperate to cling to his thinning hope that Valentine isn't a villain. If only he knew what Anna and I know."
What she said out loud was, "But surely you must have heard the rumors that all his expeditions have to do with more than just archeology!" "B, but that's all they are aren't they, rumors, right?" Again she couldn't stop the thought from creeping into her mind, "Poor, poor Tom."
"So Tom," she said, changing the subject, "where is London going?" the question seemed to throw him off. "I, I, I really don't know." he stammered. Right then Raven knew she was going to have lots of fun interrogating him.
