In the early days of Summer, a rickety old Honda Ballade holding two girls inside, one seventeen, the other twenty-one, zoomed over the highway to the nearest psychiatrist. The oldest female in the car was Tori, a smart and beautiful older sister to Zoe, the youngest girl in the car. Zoe was an ordinary girl, just average. Except for the fact that Zoe was the reason why Tori was zooming in the rickety old Honda Ballade to the psychiatrist. You could say that Zoe had a slight problem with social communication and people.
"Nearly there, I think it's just around the corner".
"Okay".
"So, are you nervous?".
"No, not at all".
"Was that sarcasm?".
"Yes, sorry". Zoe was looking out the window of the passenger, trying not to ignore her sister as Tori tried sparking any signs of conversation. All Zoe wanted to do was curl up in her bed, read a good book and forget about all the 'real people' on Earth. It wasn't that Zoe hated everyone, it was just she couldn't communicate normally.
As Tori pulled up into a white building, all Zoe could think of was the fact that this meant she had to talk to someone else besides her sister and Dad. Completely new experience. Tori got out of the car, fixing her pixie cut blonde hair in the rearview mirror and put her sunglasses on her hair instead. Zoe simply got out of the car and nervously tried hiding her face with her shoulder length brown hair.
"Oh, come here Zoe". Tori embraced the nervous seventeen year old and rested her chin on top of Zoe's head. "I called in to ask for a nice lady, so don't worry, it will soon be over". Zoe sighed as Tori let go of her and wrapped her arm around her shoulder instead. "I'm really sorry about making you do this but Dad needs all the help he can get ". Zoe nodded on Tori's shoulder and started walking with her to the scary white building. As they reached the glass doors, the butterflies in Zoe's stomach soon turned into a tsunami wave, tossing and turning. "Tori, I feel sick".
Tori stopped and let out a short, one syllable laugh, shook her head and opened the glass doors. The waiting room had flimsy chairs on one side and a big box filled with colourful toys, there were also posters hanging up for parents saying things like 'help your kid with Autism' or things like 'Dyslexia? Don't be hysteria! We can help'.Really awful slogans.
The two of them were greeted by an elderly lady sitting at the receptionists desk, who smiled warmly at the two of them. "Hello, are you here to see Dr.Lynn?". The lady, who goes by the name of Terissa (Zoe noticed her name tag) put on her half-moon glasses and began looking at the computer in front of her. "Yes, that's us. I made a reservation at two o'clock for Zoe Dashwood". Terissa started clicking and typing away on the screen in front of her when she finally found a reservation for Zoe Dashwood. "Okay then, right this way". The little old lady hopped out of her desk and gestured for the two girls to follow her down the hallway. They stopped when they landed upon a door with a plaque saying 'Ms Dr. Lynn'. Terissa knocked twice on the door then smiled at Tori and Zoe before she hobbled back to her desk. When she was out of earshot, Tori leaned over to whisper in Zoe's ear "Isn't she lovely Zoe.Hopefully Miss Lynn is as nice as her! See, nothing to be afra-".
The door swung open to reveal a tall, skinny woman wearing a grey pencil skirt. She had a fake smile and wore her hair in a tight bun. "Dr.Lynn, pleasure to meet you". Tori stuck her hand out, expecting Dr Lynn to shake hers but was rejected instead. "Um, I'm Tori and this is my sister, Zoe". Even though Tori had just been rejected a handshake, Zoe was trembling inside and would not meet Dr Lynn's gaze. Zoe couldn't even mumble a hello in the fear of being judged by this scary woman.
"Eyes up child, the first thing you do when meeting someone new is to have eye contact, it's pure manners!". Dr Lynn scolded Zoe but continued to "welcome" them inside her office.
