Broken memories
A man without purpose, ambition, a goal, and destiny, cursed never to find the answer. This is madness; it does not make sense that he is alive. Still praying that he is the man God wants him to be. Like a broken mirror, being shattered his life fell apart in a matter of a few days. Nineteen-year-old Jason Scott was in disbelief of the events that took place a few days ago.
As he returned home, he heard the bad news. The girl he had a crush on has just died in a car accident. A day that was supposed to be a day of celebrating instead turned into one of the darkest days in his life. On a warm summers day in a place called Eersterust, he was just returning from a cricket match. Even though they lost the game, he was just happy because he took his first wicket.
He has flashbacks of the time he told her how he felt, “really now Jason” walking away he realized that it was truly the last time he spoke to her. Jason the tall, light-skinned man with not much beard and short hair, is a quiet young man with not a lot of confidence and very shy, I told her how I feel, now I will never see her again. Her death changed him. With his studies and life severely affected. He is unable to sleep and when he is able to sleep, he finds himself hallucinating about her. Deciding he is going to go to her funeral to say his final farewells, at the Anglican Church in Eersterust on St Joseph Avenue. Her coffin stood open for screening in church, so he decided to pay his final respects.
Spending the whole funeral thinking. Saying his final farewells at Eersterust graveyard. After her funeral, he has countless things running through his mind. “Why did you take her instead of me Lord?” There is no need for someone like me anymore, time to pack my things. Thursday in mid-June around 10 in the morning, he leaves the comforts of home. Heading into the unknown, he takes with him is a notebook, a bible, and a warm jacket. Just because it is the middle of winter, he decides to place a cloth around his face, to protect his face from the cold. This becomes a mask for his physical and emotional scars. the journey becomes one of self-discovery. While walking on the side of the road Jason meets an elderly man. The man who was bare feet, he had tattered clothes, dark skin, and grey hair and he was trying to get Jason’s attention. Jason saw that the man was homeless and felt compassion. Putting two fingers to his lips and showing what looked like he wanted to smoke. Jason moves his hands and his shoulders, wondering, does he understand. Seeing Jason the man looks at him then turns around, walking away. Jason starts drifting again, seeing that it is late afternoon, “wondering where will spend the night.” Seeing a sign that reads, “gas station is just up ahead.” I will spend the night there says Jason. While walking him saw visions, her memories haunt him every step of the way. Tired and weary he says, I have come this far there is no way I can turn back now. Arriving at the gas station, heading for the public toilets he locks the door and tries to get some sleep.
