"Stefan, what was that?", Elena flinched after we moved on from our encounter with Mikael. Weirdly enough, a part of me felt like I knew the guy but I couldn't figure out where from, sure the man from the picture at the mansion but I thought I knew him better than just the face... and Stefan clearly did too judging from his still terrified facial expression.
"Just someone from my past.", he forced out. "It's nothing you need to concern yourself with."
As much as I wanted to believe my friend, I doubted this. The way he'd shielded Elena and my instinct to not be seen... We knew Mikael, I was sure of it.
"Really? Because that didn't seem like nothing to me!", Elena outraged herself. I couldn't agree more.
"Let's just please not talk about this right now...", Stefan attempted to shift the focus but all three of us weren't having it.
"Come on, Stefan!", Bonnie sighed. "You know Klaus! You've met Mikael before... is this some kind of secret dark past thing?"
I saw Stefan look down in a guilty manner. So Bonnie had struck a nerve, huh?
"Does that really matter? All you need to know is that the entire Mikaelson family is up to no good!", he shot me a judgy glare and ruffled through his, as always well conditioned, hair. Now what was that look supposed to mean?
"Are you really sure about that? How long has it been since you last saw them?", I questioned, trying to defend my friends. After all, I didn't give Klaus another chance for nothing. "Rebekah, for example, is really nice and Klaus is actually making an effort too. Maybe there's just more to the story!"
I was so sure of it. There had to be more to all of this! Klaus had seemed so vulnerable when telling me about his destroyed art attire or while drawing.
"Oh, there is!", Stefan scoffed. "But nothing you want to know! And if you ask again, how long it's been since the last time I saw them: two and a half months!"
What?
"How did you see them? We were all in Mystic Falls back then!", Elena asked confused. She was right... which consequently meant the Mikaelsons had been in Mystic Falls!
"The more important question: how did we not see them?", Bonnie caught onto my thought process as well.
Or what if we had? What if that was what my mind kept slipping up about? Why I'd behaved so careful around Mikael before?
"Does it matter?", Stefan shrugged the questions off. "They're just evil."
"You keep saying that!", I snapped. "But you're not giving real proof for it!"
"You're one to talk!", he shook his head annoyed. "First, you think they're okay, then you're completely terrified after seeing Klaus beat up some guys and now you're back to being all friendly with them? Random much?"
God damn him! I didn't understand myself either but I knew there was more to all this. Yes, Klaus beat up those dudes and yes, I did so not agree with that, however he was really trying to make up for it! Why would he do that if he was just plain evil? And how did we forget about meeting the Mikaelsons in Mystic Falls? How did I not remember anything? Ugh, this was so frustrating!
"Anyways, didn't you want to show us your school?", Bonnie caught me off guard as she tried to calm the situation.
"Oh, yeah. Right...", I cleared my throat and started walking towards the building I had been in every day for the past couple of weeks. It seemed completely empty, no surprise considering it was a weekend but it was still pretty unusual for me to see. The past times I had approached the gate, the corners had already been filled with all kinds of students, now the doors were closed and noone else in sight. At least that was what I thought at first. Something felt off the second we reached the building and I was uneasy as a result when I told my friends, we were here. Careful, I touched the gate and it swung open.
"Oh, we can even see it from the inside?", Elena asked cheerful and already wanted to step inside but I held her back.
"This should be locked.", I stated and inspected my school once again. This time, I noticed a silhouette at the upper window. "There's someone inside."
I narrowed my eyes as I tried to make out the person's face. It looked like a man. He opened up a window as wide as he could and I recognized him to be Marcel. Why was he at school.
"Are we going in or what's going on?", Bonnie wanted to know, a bit confused.
"I'd like to have that knowledge too but we'll have to wait to find out.", I mumbled, more to myself. Meanwhile, I got out my phone and typed a message to Rebekah. It didn't take long for her to respond and she sounded like she was in distress.
