It was less than a week before Benny had to stand before hundreds of people and give a speech that was prepared for him. His hands wouldn't stop shaking as he thought about the upcoming events. His nerves were fried due to a lack of sleep, so when he stood before the crowd before him, his breathing came in raspy gasps.
He couldn't help but laugh softly from the beginning of it all.
"Sir Benny, what do you think about being the first non-royal in power here?" A man had asked him.
Benny had dropped the papers for his speeches on a chair after being dragged out to the balcony. He took a deep inhale and laughed softly. "Sorry, I guess I'm a little nervous. I had a speech written down, but accidentally dropped it on my way here." He admitted, getting unwelcoming mutters among the people. "When I was told I would be the next ruler, I couldn't help mock the idea. I certainly don't deserve the honor for the title. Honestly, I freaked out."
Once again the ocean of people muttered loudly about him. However, Benny stood his ground and continued. "I'm not a ruler or a very good follower. Anyone who looks at me could tell you this. I've always preferred the arts and while I may not major in any artistic talents, art is what I am about."
"It is for this reason that I do not believe I would make a great ruler. However," He paused and skimmed over the crowd. "I know if I could learn from past mistakes, learn from the people, from the advisors and all the elders, I could also learn to play my role to the best of my abilities. To do my damndest of protecting, cherishing and help make this country grow."
"I will not speak ill of the last ruler, King Vaan, because I have the advantage of learning what not to do and how to handle things differently. I beg you all, here and now, please, let me learn from you. I will earn my right to rule this country, or so I be damned for an eternity. Give me a chance to earn your trust, your respect and to give you hope for a better future."
The crowd grew silent. It was obvious that many of them still had their doubts about him. Benny gave a soft sigh. He knew he had failed to reach them.
"We're counting on you, then." The man who had asked the question stated.
Benny was shocked that he reached the heart of one man, so when a good portion of the crowd began to cheer his name, he felt a great burden lift from his chest. Still, he was at a loss for words to see so many happy faces. He nodded firmly, the resolve in his heart strengthening with each call of his name.
