Summary: The last ball of the year in Calum's kingdom. Everything fell apart between you two over the past month, but one dance can bring back all of those beautiful memories. A red rose can symbolize love, but for you two it was such a deeper meaning.

It was the last ball for the winter season. The lights were shining all around the large ballroom, making every other princess look like a beautiful daydream from the design of their dresses. I sighed to myself, feeling empty and lost without Calum. Normally, I would be dancing with him, talking to him or just plain old enjoying his presence as we stood together out on the balcony. I would say the stars are beautiful tonight, and he would reply with the cliche: not as beautiful as you. Tonight was different though. We weren't dancing. We weren't talking or laughing or enjoying each other's company on the balcony. We weren't gazing at the stars together. Tonight, he sat on his throne that I knew he hated with his head resting in the palm of his hand. Meanwhile, I stood up against the wall, feeling sad and looking pathetic as ever.

"Would you like to dance your highness?" Looking up from the deep redness of my dress, my gaze locked with a man who looked to be in his mid twenties. He was clad in all white, completely contrasting to Calum's usual all black attire. The man held his hand out to me, and I looked over to Calum who was already looking straight at me from his throne. His teeth were chewing on the plumpness of his lips, as if waiting to see what decision I would make.

"It would be a pleasure," I whispered, curtsying before I took his hand, letting him guide me to the center of the ball room. The sound of the string quartet began playing a song I had rehearsed the dance to so many times. My dress flowed with every turn the man, who's name I've learned to be Luke, made me do. By the time the dance was almost over, I could feel my toes hurt from Luke stepping on my feet accidentally.

"May I ask to dance with Princess [Y/N]?" I could feel my feel my heart drop at the sight of him front of me. If it wasn't for Luke's arm around my waist, holding me a little too close to him, I may have just sunk to the floor right then and there. This wasn't happening, it couldn't be happening in this moment. I knew I should've thanked Prince Luke for the dance, but I couldn't tear my eyes away from his body standing tall, a little shorter than Luke but still tall. He was dressed in his famous attire; a black jacket over a crisp white shirt with frills at the neckline, accompanied with a small red rose on the jacket sleeves, and black slacks with nicely polished shoes to match. I could feel my breath hitch at the small red rose still stitched into the sleeve of his jacket.

"What is your favorite flower?" Looking over at Calum, I rose an eyebrow at him while cocking my head to the side. It was a summer day, and the roses were in full bloom. I've always been fond of roses and their beauty, so I decided to have a little horse ride into the forest and away from the palace; I was of course accompanied by Calum who decided to turn this into a picnic as well.

"I would have to say roses, why?" I mused, and he just shook his head and smiled at me. Raising his hand to shield his eyes from the blaring sun, Calum took a bite from his freshly picked apple. I found myself gazing at him, studying his features as he watched everything around him. The quiet whispers of wind tangling themselves into his short hair as he smiled at me while offering me an apple of my own.

"Just asking so I know what to give you for your birthday, or just to have a remembrance of you in some way when you leave me here in my lonesome." I could feel myself blush from his forwardness, but I didn't mind it and gladly took the apple from him.

"If you really want to remember me in some way, you should know that red is my favorite color, especially on a rose."

"I should put a rose on my jacket sleeve," he said as if it was the best idea in the world, and I just shook my head at him, wiping the apple on my dress before biting into it. I let out a small yelp when some of the juice ran down my chin; Calum chuckled before handing me a handkerchief.

"Thank you, but doesn't that seem a little out of the ordinary to you? Putting a rose on your sleeve?"

"Not if it's for someone I love oh so dearly."

"Of course Calum," Luke smiled warmly at Calum who in return gave him a pat on the shoulder. Luke handed me off to Calum as if I were some fragile doll, and Calum's brown eyes practically bored into mine as he slipped his right hand fingers into the open spaces of my left hand, and his left hand was firmly placed on the small of my back. The music had stopped playing, and most of the other dancers had exited off the ball room floor at this point. Calum looked over at the quartet, throwing a small head nod their way, and the sound of a beautiful melody filled the large room.

"Calum, what are you doing?" I whispered as he took the lead and began gliding me across the nicely polished floor. My dress contrasted with his suit, and from my peripheral vision, I could see my mom in her navy blue Victorian dress; she was sipping on red wine as she watched my forbidden romance with Calum begin to rekindle itself.

"I'm dancing with you princess." Slightly cringing at the title usage, I sighed as Calum twirled me around and brought me back into his chest. I felt breathless from how close his lips were to mine, and if I hadn't known any better, I felt as though he would kiss me. To my dismay, he just began dancing with me as the minutes ticked by. "What, is it forbidden that I may dance with you as well?" He chuckled, but I could hear the sense of mockery laced in his voice; I blushed.

"I thought you were upset with me-"

"Oh I am princess. I very much am." Before I could say anything, he was spinning me so my back was pressed against his hard chest. If I wasn't having trouble breathing then, I sure was now. Moving my hair to the side, Calum's breath hit my neck in small pants as he placed a chaste kiss there. We were slightly swaying until I tensed under his touch. "But I cannot resist you in your dress and beauty. You somehow managed to enchant me once again without trying." His voice was soft as he spoke in my ear as he turned me to face him once again. Calum's once vibrant and beautiful brown eyes now looked lost and pained. It made my heart ache to just console him, but I knew I had to abide by social status rules.

"Calum..."

"Don't say anything." Closing his eyes firmly, he opened them once again. The music still played in the background and we stood still in the midst of other couples dancing. All I could focus on was Calum; his lips, his hair, his eyes, just his everything. Opening my mouth to speak, I was silenced by Calum cupping my face with his hands and kissing me passionately. I held his arms as my heart rate felt as though it was beating a million times per minute. In this moment, I forgot about everything else around me. I didn't care that this was not acceptable behavior, or the fact that my mother and father were probably watching me with wide eyes and open mouths. In this moment, I was kissing the love of my life with everything I had. Pulling away reluctantly, Calum smiles and breathes out two words that would have any girl in this kingdom weak in the knees.

"Marry me."
