One month after regionals
Having only just arrived home, Piper was surprised when Deborah and James where sitting at the dining room table, waiting for her. Even more surprisingly, her second oldest sister, Laura, was there too. Laura should've been at university, and Piper knew she wasn't much of a family person, so visiting was out of the question.
"Piper, sit," Laura told her, and Piper was surprised that her sister's eyes - so much like her own - brimmed with tears. Her older sister choked on air and ran out of the room, crying as she did so. Deborah rose to go after her, but decided against it, turning to face Piper once more.
"W-what is going on?" Piper asked, becoming more and more worried as time progressed.
"Around three hours ago, when you were out, we got a phone call from the police." James explained, attempting to keep his voice calm. "They found Rebecca's body out in the snow not too long before the police called us.
"Oh no! Is she hurt?" Piper cried, jumping up in horror. The 16 year old loved her eldest sister to bits, and the thought of her being hurt was alarming Piper immensely.
"No, she's not hurt," James whispered, unable to face his little sister.
"I don't understand."
"Piper, sweetie" Her mom butted in, hiding her trembling hands under the table, "She's... She's.." Yet even no nonsense Deborah could not bring herself to tell Piper.
Just at that moment, Laura emerged from the doorway, holding her bags and hair tied back in a ponytail. Her brown eyes were the only giveaway that inside she was hurting - badly."Piper, she's dead."
