IN WHICH HEHE
The party walks the train tracks as a whole. Yes, as a whole.
Will had brought along a little cassette player gifted to him by Jonathan, and was playing Take On Me by A-ha.
Dustin danced along the train tracks, nearly tripping numerous times, but making everybody laugh.
They were setting out for the junkyard, just to hang out, because the pool was full and dear god, the mall was packed to the brim. Dustin was disappointed because that meant he couldn't go visit Steve and see how his relationship with his coworker Robin was going. El was disappointed because they couldn't get ice cream, and well, if El was disappointed, Mike was too.
They seemed to be walking for ages, but clearly it only felt that way because of how hot it was, the July sun burnt down on their backs, and they thought they would be roasted by the heat, like they were on a barbecue.
Max and El were talking, and walking ahead of the group, while Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Mike all talked about the D&D they used to play and how they wanted to get back into playing more again.
El and Max were talking about boys. El needed boy advice, and she needed someone to tell all her secrets to. Luckily, she had a girl best friend now.
Obviously, along with being her boyfriend, for the longest time, Mike was her absolute best friend. But there just were certain things she couldn't tell him, even though she felt them strongly.
For instance, she couldn't tell Mike she was falling in love. That was stupid. Idiotic. Absurd.
"Max, can I tell you something?" El's voice fell quiet.
"Yeah, of course?" Max asked, in a questioning tone, preparing for whatever was coming, assuming the worst.
"I-I," she stopped, frightened over what she was about to say. "First, promise me you won't say anything to anyone."
"I promise."
"O-okay then. I, I think I love Mike." El said, so quiet that only Max had the capability to hear the words that had delicately escaped El's lips.
A big whole-hearted smile grew wide on Max's face, and she hugged her friend sideways, to which El rolled her eyes.
"Yeah yeah, I don't need you to get all mushy on me."
"No, I'm proud of you, El."
"Proud of me?"
"Yeah. It seems like you and Mike are the only two people in this whole world who haven't realized you're in love with each other, I'm proud of you for catching on and admitting it! But I won't tell anyone, I promise." Max giggled a bit, because El had turned watermelon red, and quit making eye contact.
El groaned, she just knew.
Max would never stop teasing her about this.
"But hey," Max added. El looked at her once more. "You should tell him." Max smiled, as the rest of the boys caught up, and they got closer to the old lot of cars.
Nobody went there, really. They'd only really gone there for a hideout, to find a gate, or to fight demo-dogs. They so very casually walked down to the main area, where El opened her bag and pulled out one of the folded blankets she'd brought, and Max grabbed the one she'd been carrying.
El flopped over on her back, and looked at the clouds, reminding her of the time her and Mike once went cloud gazing together. She had to tell him, now.
She looked at Max, and Max knew right away.
"Hey, guys, I wanna clean up the inside of the bus cause maybe we can hang out in there." Max said, looking at Mike, who was just looking at the sky, squinting because of the sun.
Max slammed the door to the bus shut.
"Mike?"
"Yeah, El?" he asked, looking at her, smiling at her beauty.
"Uh there was something I wanted to tell you."
"Alright, go ahead." Mike said casually, as if he wasn't going over every single bad thing that could happen in his head.
Inside the bus
"Alright you little shits listen up. El told me something very, very important today, and if all goes well, she's going to tell Mike. Now, I've brought you all in here so you don't spoil it, so lets just watch through one of the windows." Max said, turning into the biggest fan of El and Mike's relationship to ever exist.
Back to the outside
"Mike, I," El froze, her throat closing, the thought of her saying these words to Mike scared her so badly.
"Mike, I love you." she said, quickly, hoping he would and wouldn't hear it all at once.
His eyes widened, and she thought the worst, but his shocked expression quickly turned into happiness, and he hugged her tightly, not a kiss, because he knew their friends were in the bus.
"I love you too, El." he whispered to her, making her smile widely.
Meanwhile, Max was cheering from inside the bus, and the three other boys inside with her thought she had gone mad.
But the party was whole again, and promises and love were prominent, just like the summer sun.
