Background: This song focuses on the struggles in life and how you can overcome them by finding your flashlight in your life. I pictured this music video to be at a beach setting because it portrays a more emotional appeal. The storyline is based on a little boy who is fed up with his family and life. He doesn't know what to do anymore so he leaves. He encounters an older gentleman while he was gone and this man became a "flashlight" to the boy. The music video is based upon the man's influence on the boy and how he became this joy in the little boy's messed up life.
Plot line: The scene fades in a little boy. He has bright blonde hair, blue eyes, and looks to be about 7 or 8. He is sitting on the staircase in his house with his head buried between his legs, trying to cover his ears. From the camera's POV, we see the staircase on the right with the boy and in the background on the left we see what looks like a dining room and two parents angrily bickering. There is no sound at all but from the frequent hand gestures and facial expressions we can tell this quarrel is very heated. *quick scene change* The camera is zoomed in on the boys face as tears are running down his red cheeks. The camera zooms out as we watch the boy walk to a table under the stair case and lay down a hand written note; it says "I've lost myself so I need to find myself somewhere else." The boy wipes his falling tears from his face and walks to the front door. He opens the doors and enters a dark night atmosphere, leaving the door open and never looking back. The scene fades out to a quick second of blackness. *music begins* The next scene fades in and we see Hunter. Hunter is in what looks like a tunnel alongside a beach cliff. Hunter is in a white unbuttoned, flowy shirt with blue jeans rolled up to his ankles and no shoes. As Hunter starting singing, he walks forward out of the darkness behind him. As the words "run away" are sung, the scene changes quickly and we see the little boy running fast down the beach boardwalk. The scene goes back to Hunter singing but this time the camera is on the opposite side of Hunter. Instead of darkness behind him, Hunter is being illuminated by the bright sun behind him as well as the blue of the ocean waves. This creates a more "heavenly" appeal to the setting, especially when Hunter sings about heaven. As the last line of the verse is sung, the camera zooms in on a life preserver that Hunter is walking by. The life preserver symbolizes how Hunter's life was saved. *chorus/scene change* The scene cuts to different setting. Hunter is on a boardwalk, the same as the little boy. The time is dawn and the sun is just rising, and there are not many people there besides a few scattered about the boardwalk. Hunter is walking backwards down the boardwalk with his guitar strapped and hanging down on his back. The camera follows Hunter as he sings passionately and from our POV it looks as if Hunter is being engulfed by the sun. He is being illuminated, almost like he's a form of light. *scene change* We see the little boy sitting at the end of the boardwalk on a bench. He is being accompanied by an older gentleman who is fishing. Together, they are smiling, laughing, and casting out fishing lines. It's seems like they've known each other forever even though it may have only been an hour. The boy seems to be letting go of all his sad emotions and is enjoying himself a bit. *scene change* The camera goes back to Hunter walking down the boardwalk. The camera is in front this time and Hunter is walking toward us as he sings. Hunter makes it to the end of the boardwalk and finishes the chorus as he sings and watches the little boy and the fisherman enjoy themselves. *verse 2/scene change* Hunter is walking alongside the water. He kicks up water and his jeans get wet as we feel such passion and intensity from what he is singing. He clutches his heart strongly as he sings "my rough around the edges heart is yours." *scene change* The scene cuts back to the boardwalk as we see, from behind, the little boy and the fisherman still sitting on the bench fishing. Hunter finishes off the verse singing and playing his guitar standing next to the bench, however the boy and fisherman don't notice him singing there. *chorus/scene change* The scene changes again and where the boy and fisherman used to be sitting at the end of the boardwalk, there is now a stage where Hunter and his band are performing. The camera focuses on Hunter and the band, and Hunter even starts doing his hip rolls with the guitar. The energy is really high and Hunter is singing with such passion that you wanna cry. Just before Hunter sings "there's just enough hope when it shines" the camera switches to the little boy and the fisherman in the audience. The boy is smiling tremendously as he is sitting on the man's shoulders. The camera quickly switches back and we see Hunter with a huge smile across his face from watching the two in the audience. *bridge/scene change* The scene changes and Hunter is back in the tunnel with the darkness behind him. Hunter is walking toward the camera, looking at it like he is singing directly to us. His face is full of emotion and love because he has found the flashlight in his life. *scene change* Just before Hunter sings "its the moments that save my life nobody knows about," the scene changes and we see the little boy fishing again with the man. The sun is setting, creating a reddish yellow quality to the sky. Hunter comes back into the acne playing his guitar. The sun is surrounding Hunter from the back as he singing "when the worlds to dark I'll find your flashlight!" *last chorus/scene change* Hunter is back onstage with his band. It is dark outside and the stage is illuminated with bright yellow flashing lights. Hunter is jumping and singing with such great passion and enthusiasm and the audience is going crazy. The camera switches to the little boy standing up front watching Hunter. He has the biggest smile on his face and the fisherman lifts him up on his shoulders for a better view. The camera switches again and is focused directly on Hunter. He is standing in the middle of a spotlight until he finished singing "you keep shunting your light." *scene change* The stage is gone and the boardwalk is back to the way it was before with the bench at the end. The camera switches to the little boy who appears to be standing alone now after saying goodbye to the man. The boy weaves his way through the people and returns to the bench where he was sitting with the man. He sits and waits in silence, just stalking time so he doesn't have to return home. Hunter sings the last line of the song "I'm just finding your flashlight" and we see from behind the boy there is a little dim light. It's a flashlight. The light comes closer and we see it's the boys parents, holding hands because they have made up. The scene fades out as we see the family hugging and Hunter retreats to the beginning of the boardwalk. *music ends*
