Wednesday came around and Nate ignored Alex. Although she was upset by Nate and their situation, she was distracted by other pressing matters. She had past life situations to continue to handle. Alex would have been annoyed except she was in need of something to disturb her while she awaited Nate to finally be hers and only hers. Her brother had called, which he rarely had since he had helped Alex move.
"Maybe you should come home, it'll be safer for you."
"No, it won't. He could be anywhere."
"Alex, please. The cops said they can't get a hold of him. It looks like he has gone off the radar, which probably means the cops were close and he ran. He could be coming after you."
"If he was coming after me, I would probably be dead."
"You have no one there to keep you safe."
"That's not true, I found... someone."
"Someone? Like who?"
"Like a guy."
"Oh, of course you did."
"He might actually be the one for me."
"You said that about the last three guys you've been with."
"Yeah, well, I'm hoping this one isn't gonna croak anytime soon."
"Still got your sick sense of humor I see."
"But you love me anyway."
"Mm debatable. Fine Alex, just please be safe."
"I knew you'd give in. You're too easy."
"Yeah, yeah. Shut up."
"Bye."
"See ya."
The phone call had ended, but Alex's mind had been all over the place. Her ex-boyfriend was on the run. Had they gotten that close to finding all evidence that was left pointed to him or had he just been paranoid. Alex had assumed that it was the latter. There was little to no evidence at all, if they were to pin it on her ex-boyfriend would have had to have been mainly circumstantial evidence. The cops wanted more so it would be a closed case before the trials even started.
"Why do you seem agitated?"
"What?"
"You seem annoyed."
"More worried."
"About what?"
"Stuff."
"Stop being vague Alex, it's annoying."
"You want to know what's annoying, Nate."
"No, because I know what you're going to say."
"So you read minds now?"
"Just yours."
"Perfect, then I don't need to tell you what's up because you already know."
"Alex..."
"Yeah okay. Apparently, my ex-boyfriend–"
"The one who died?"
"No, the one suspected of killing him–"
"Wait, what?"
"I never really told you how my last boyfriend died, well it was said to be a suicide, but they think it was my ex. Just a lot of suicides committed the same way, the police became suspicious."
"Is he in prison?"
"Nope, not enough evidence to convict him or even hold him. But he is apparently on the loose and the police don't know where he is."
"Are you worried he might hurt you?"
"No, but everyone else is."
"I trust your judgement, but are you sure?"
"Ninety-nine percent sure."
"That one percent makes me nervous."
"You and everyone else."
"Just be careful."
"Always."
