"Hey, I was wondering what you were up to tonight?"
I stare down at the Doritos in my lap and my journal on the messy bed.
"Oh, you know, not much. Why?"
His voice on the other end of the phone is charming, and somewhat shy.
"I hoped you'd go on a date with me. Not a hang-out, a real-life date."
I am silent for a moment as the butterflies pound through my chest and up into my throat.
I let out a small giggle, "What? A date?"
Him: "Yes. What do you think?"
Me: "I think...you should pick me up at 8pm."
I can hear him smile on the other end of the phone. I myself am grinning, goofily.
"Sounds like a date, " he says, adding, "By the way, it's a surprise, but wear...something casual."
"See you tonight," I say, still grinning, and we hang up the phone simultaneously.
My little dog is awoken on the bed by my happy squeals. I toss the chips up in the air and they explode everywhere, creating orangey, cheesy glitter dust.
Oops. Maybe not the best idea. But it was fun.
It's already 5pm and I'm just barely starting my homework. Actually I had not started my homework at all. Between journaling and the out-of-the-ordinary phone-call I was completely and beatifully distracted. I welcomed distraction.
Mom and Dad are at work until 6pm and I'm supposed to be in charge of making dinner tonight. I pop in a supreme pizza and toss a salad. Then I run back upstairs to hit the shower.
I am going to look amazing tonight. And somehow, he will look even more amazing, because that's him. The guy I have a crush on.
