We stood in front of the entryway that led toward the Rosewood University campus. Gosh, I can’t believe we’re in college already. It felt like it was only yesterday that we started highschool together, and now we’re about to go to our first day of college. It’s honestly pretty scary. After college is over with, what’s gonna happen next? Find a little apartment in the big city, get a job, get married and have a couple of kids? I don’t know what the others are planning for their future, but that’s what's running around in my little brain.
My best friends since we were in elementary school, Kevin and Cheyenne, were still taking all of this in. Cheyenne was just your average girl. She's shy at first but is such a sweetheart once you get to know her. Kevin, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of Cheyenne. He has a bad temper pretty much twenty-four seven and bitches about everything that goes slightly wrong in his life. We probably wouldn't have become friends if it wasn't for this one thing we all had in common; we all could play instruments.
And no, i don't mean banging on the xylophone or toot tooting on a recorder. I mean actual instruments you can make a living off of. Both me and Kevin started playing guitar at a young age, and Cheyenne could play piano really well. We would meet up after school all the time and just have a little jam session with our instruments. It's been a tradition of ours since middle school, and now, we probably won't be able to do that anymore with this new school year coming up. That's what i was afraid of the most.
Like me, they probably weren't ready for the huge rollercoaster of a ride these next 4 years at this school awaits us. We always hear from other people on the interwebs how much of a hell college can be. Now we were about to experience what those people had to deal with, and see what the big deal was.
We couldn’t just keep on standing here for hours just staring at the campus entrance. I tried to sound cheerful and elbowed Kevin and Cheyenne in their sides. “Hey, we should probably get a move on. Let’s go explore this place!” I said, forcing myself to sound enthusiastic.
They both looked at me with an unsure expression on their faces. Gosh, they make it seem like they’re at the gates of hell which, ironically, is kinda what college is. I started to lose patience so i grabbed both of them by the arms and dragged them through the entrance, ignoring their cries of protest. I don't really see what they're making a big deal about, it wasn't even a real school day today! Today was kinda like an orientation day. There wasn’t any classes so we could walk around the campus and figure out where everything was before the real thing starts tomorrow.
We spent about half the day walking around the campus. The place was huge! Then again, it is a pretty popular school. They probably get loads of applications every year, but only accept a large handful. There were huge courtyards everywhere where we could hang out in between classes. There was a cafe and a little fast food joint on campus too, which can be useful for pulling all-nighters. It took us forever to find out where our classes were, the only problem is remembering how to get there in this labyrinth of a school.
At the end of the day, we all decided to grab something to eat. We went back out to the two food places just to see a big ass line in both of them. It looked like those big ass lines you would see at a walmart on black friday. I guess everyone wanted to try them out. We didn't have the energy to wait for hours in those lines, so we just decided to get some food later once the hype dies down.
“Alright guys, what now?” I asked at a complete loss.
Cheyenne stretched and put her arms up behind her head, “well i don't know about you guys, but i want to check out my dorm and meet my roomie!”
Now that she mentioned it, I was curious myself to see who i'd be living with throughout the whole school year. We had already visited our dorms a week ago to unpack our belongings, but our roomies either weren't there or had already unpacked. Both Kevin and I nodded in agreement and we headed off to the dormitories.
The dormitories was one big separate building. It was tall, so it had many stories. We felt small standing next to such a tall building.
Cheyenne turned to us, “my room is on the 7th floor, how about you guys?”
“5th” both me and Kevin said in unison. We turned to each other and yelled “jynx!”, pointing at each other with finger guns.
“aw lucky…” Cheyenne said with a frown, “you guys are on the same floor…”
“I'd be more hyped if we shared the same room. That's one less idiot to deal with!” Kevin said with a laugh.
“Well i dunno, i'm in room 520,” i said, kinda hopeful
Kevin scowled “goddammit, 517”
“Well at least we're not too far apart! We're practically next door neighbors! Now come on! I wanna get going!”
Both me and Cheyenne skipped excitedly to our dorms. Kevin lagged behind, still salty about the whole room thing.
We took the stairs until we reached the 5th floor. Cheyenne was completely out of breath. Stairs aren't really her favorite thing in the world. There were elevators that we could have taken instead, but elevators are the one thing i feared the most on this planet. Ever since i watched that show with the elevator malfunction in it, I had been scarred ever since. I would never get in one of those things if my life depended on it, fearing that the same fate might happen to me if i hopped on one.
“Well i guess this is where we part,” Cheyenne said, “have fun meeting your roomies!” And with that, she vanished up the stairs to the 7th floor.
Me and Kevin walked together down the hallway until we found our rooms.
Kevin placed his hand on the doorknob and paused. “please be a normal person, nothing too crazy please!” i heard Kevin mumble. He twisted the knob, opened the door, and went inside. All i heard before his door close was someone yell, “HOWDY ROOMMATE!!!” In a sea of rock-n-roll music. Damn. It's almost as if Kevin jinxed it. It's already obvious that he's going to have a long year with a roommate like that. I almost feel bad for him, I just hope mine isn't like that.
I walked a few rooms down until i reached room 520. I paused, nervous myself. I didn't know who to expect, and overall i don't really care who i get. I just hope they're a lot calmer than poor Kevin's roomate. I tried to open door, but it was locked. Reaching into my phone case wallet, i grabbed the key and inserted it into the door. Twisting and unlocking it, i opened the door and a sweet musical melody welcomed me inside. It felt quite soothing.
My eyes immediately landed on a guy laying on his loft bed with a keyboard on his lap. He paused from playing his nice little tune when he noticed i had arrived. He looked up at me and gave me the nicest smile
“Hi! You must be Hana!”
