I woke up to my phone ringing, and I saw it was my friend, William. I checked the time while I picked up the phone, and it was nine-forty-five am. I remembered that it was Saturday and that I have work today. I then answered my phone.
"Hello?" I said, my voice raspy because I had just woken up.
"Good morning, almost birthday girl, Cassandra," said William enthusiastically.
"I still have two months, and you know I would rather be called Cass. Also, almost is not the word in that sentence. Plus your birthday is closer. It's in two weeks," I said smiling.
"Yes, but you only turn nineteen once. I am turning twenty," he said in a matter-of-factly tone.
"Well, you only turn twenty once," I said, throwing his own words back at him. "Anyways, I'm gonna hop in the shower and go for my daily run in the park. I'll be at work in a few hours."
"Depends on how long you want your shower, and if you can reach everything," he said trying not to laugh.
"Excuse you. I am 5'4. I am closer to average height. You are crazy tall," I said in a very serious tone.
"6'1 is not that tall. You are just that shorter than me," he said and he laughed when he finished.
"Okay, I'm hanging up now. I'll see you in a few hours." I said laughing as well.
"Sounds good," he said and hung up.
I got in the shower. It was the next to last week of school. Luckily, it was senior year for me. William was in his second year of college. He bought an apartment close to my school so I could room with him. I lived in an orphanage. I had a boyfriend there. He then broke up with me because he wanted to go to the next level and I didn't. Then I found a different orphanage and went to school while I was living there. After a while a met William and we became friends. Eventually, I moved in with William, and he is like a big brother to me. He made sure I was taken care of. I lived with him, his parents, and his brother until this year, for him and I got an apartment.
I then got out of the shower. I got dressed in my running clothes and put my waist-length blonde hair in a high ponytail. I looked at my green eyes in the mirror. I had a fairly good tan because I got in the pool as soon as the weather was warm. I got out of the apartment and went on my run.
I, eventually, sat on a park bench and drank some water. The sun was almost high in the sky. I checked my watch and saw it was eleven-fifty. I stood up and was about to go when I heard crying. I started to follow the crying sound. When I finally found the source of the sound, I was shocked because it was a baby. The child was sunburnt a little bit. I thought of calling William, but then I decided to just bring the child to work.
I picked up the carrier the baby was in and something fell on the ground. It looked like an envelope. I set the carrier down, grabbed the envelope, picked the carrier back up, and went back home. I got dressed as fast as I could. When I finished, I opened the envelope and found a letter. It said:
To whoever finds my child,
I thank you for finding him. I know you are probably confused about everything, and I also know you are probably frustrated at me. I apologize for leaving him. I can't take care of him, nor can he go to an orphanage. He is 6 months old. I left him at the park at nine-forty-five am. He should be in good health except for maybe a little sunburn. His name is Nathaniel Jordan. His last name will be yours because I'm asking you to adopt him. Thank you again for finding Nate.
Sincerely,
