"Thank you, Anna, I love it!" I beam proudly, as one of my many maids eagerly awaits my approval.
She is a beautiful golden-haired, brown-eyed girl, maybe only a year or so older than myself. I've always considered Anna more of a close friend than my servant.
Anna was left as an orphan, at the gates of the palace. We were not an orphanage, but there happened to be a kind older woman who was my mother's lady, Mina, who had always longed for a child of her own. Her husband had passed long ago, and they never conceived a child beforehand. Long story short, Mina was given the privilege to adopt the child, whom she raised in the palace as a lady, for me!
Miss Mina had not only been my mother's dearest friend but the only mother Anna had ever known. Two years before my mother passed, Miss Mina passed. My mother gave Miss Mina her word that Anna would be taken care of as our royal's own. Once Miss Mina passed on, my mother held to her word. My mother offered Anna the option to come out of being a servant and only be a sister-like companion for me, but Anna politely refused my mother's offer.
Anna had always felt in debt to the royal crown, because of being taken in and being allowed to be adopted. When my mother died, it was almost like Anna lost a mother all over again. As painful as that was to go through, it ended up bringing us all closer.
She always told me her mother, Miss Mina, lived to serve her queen to the best of her abilities. As a lady to the future queen and a dearest friend, Anna promised me the same.
I smile at Anna and embrace her tightly. All of my clothes are made specifically for me; Anna has made most of what's hanging in my huge closet of dresses! She knows the look I'm going for tonight.
Dad made tonight sound extremely important, so I made sure Anna knew I had to look especially like a princess for tonight's ball.
It's simple, yet extremely elegant. The sleeves are short, and they hang off my shoulders. As the gown goes down, it forms a thick skirt with feathery midnight fabric. The gems that surround the waist give it the perfect touch.
"You look so beautiful, Elise!"
"Thank you, Anna! I wish you could be here with me tonight."
"I'm sorry Elise, I can't. I have other things to tend to."
"But you could...."
"Elise, this is who you are. You're our princess and our future queen. I am you faithful, sisterly servant!" I sigh, looking into her eyes. I know whatever I say will never change her mind.
"Thank you." Before we can carry on with our conversation we hear a knock on the door. Anna gives me a look, asking for permission to allow the person on the other side to enter. I nod in confirmation.
"You may enter the Princess's chambers." Right as the words leave her mouth, my father enters the room. He is looking extra dashing tonight. Perhaps there are business matters to attend to during the party.
"Hi, dad." I smile as I leave Anna's side and walk towards him. Anna slightly bows her head toward my father.
"Your majesty." My father chuckles in amusement, as I smile.
"Hello, girls!" He makes his way toward me.
" You look beautiful Elise!" He extends his arm for me to take hold of. "Are you ready sweetheart?"
I feel my smile fall for only a split second until I cover it up with my perfectly arranged mask.
"Anna, you take the night off dear." My dad nods his head slightly toward her as we leave the comfort of my room.
Anna and I share a glance before I'm escorted down the many levels of stairs toward the west wing of the palace; the grand ballroom.
It all happens in a blur. Before I know it, I hear the herald tap his staff on the marble floor.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, please turn your attention to the high king, Charles Trevenson-Vartel Forjayn, of the Cair Paravel throne and the princess, future queen, Elise Ever-Loreigh-Baya Forjayn."
I hear applause echoing throughout the entire room.
Showtime...
