It was a Sunday morning. I woke up around nine in the morning, like usual. I rolled out of bed quietly and walked to the window. Peeking through the shades into the back yard, I saw the birds and squirrels in the yard. I turned away, looking back to my wife, who lay sleeping, silently. I walked from the window to the door and opened it as quietly as i could.
I turned down the hallway, walking towards the kitchen to prepare breakfast. I got to the kitchen counter, then turned to get my coffee mug out of the cabinet. I filled it with the fresh coffee from the maker, then slowly took a sip. I always liked my coffee black. I paced around the kitchen for a few minutes, waiting for my coffee to cool off.
It was my birthday. I was turning 28. I walked to the window of the kitchen and looked out, seeing the street. I wonder what she got me. I couldn't help it, I hadn't been able to go into the garage for weeks, due to the gift that my wife had in it. I let the temptation get the best of me as i opened the door and walked in. There was a large object covered in a tarp. I peeked under it in the back, revealing the manufacturer, model, and year. It was a '69 Camaro, my dream car. I wondred how she got it, since i had been looking everywhere for one.
Suddenly I heard a scream, coming from my wife. I ran into the house, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and bolted to the bedroom. I turned around the corner to see our neighbor, Dan Jones, eating my wife, like a sick, cannibalistic monster. "Dan!" I yelled, "Get away from her! What's wrong with you!" Then he looked towards me, his eyes where a dark grey, with no pupils. Then i noticed his arm was gone. A look of fear took over my face, "how are you even walking Dan?!" I asked. Then i realized it wasn't Dan.
He... I mean it, jumped at me, letting out a feral scream. I stabbed it in the gut, and held my arm up against its neck, trying to push it away. Then I noticed it was trying to bite me. This thing wasn't just trying to kill me, it wanted to eat me. Then I grabbed my knife from its gut and shoved it away. I took a second to regain my footing and then I charged towards it. We met each other after I took about three steps, then I kicked it in the chest, knocking it on its ass. Then I stabbed it in the chest, but it never flinched at the pain. Thinking back to the games I played as a kid, I stabbed it in the head. The creature became motionless.
I stood up and walked to my wifes body. Her insides lying out of her body. She was dead. I fell to my knees beside the bed. Tears running down my face. "Why?! What is this?! What's happening?!" I screamed in despair while looking at my wife's remains. Alright get it together Alex, you gotta get up and get out of here, I thought to myself. I stood up and wiped the tears from my face. I walked to the dresser and opened the drawer my wife used. I grabbed my present and ripped it open, still shaking with fear. It was holding the keys to the car in the garage, and a card she had gotten me. I grabbed both objects and put them on top of the dresser. I walked to the closet and pulled out my book bag that I used in the war. I unzipped it and stuffed clothes, food, water, and the card my wife got me inside.
I only had one thing left to do. I walked to the garage and pulled the tarp off of the car. I opened the door and put the bag in the back seat, on the passenger's side. I pulled two boxes off of a shelf in the back of the garage and lugged them over to the car. I opened the trunk and put them inside. Then I grabbed a match and some lighter fluid off of anaother shelf. I walked back into my bedroom and poored lighter fluid on my wife and Dan's bodies. Then I struck a match. I threw the burning match onto the bed and the flames lit. I didn't want the bodies rotting in my home forever.
I walked back out to the garage and started the car, it was full on gas. I still got out and grabbed three gas containers anyway, after all I didn't know where I was going. Then I got back in and drove out of the garage. I was frightened by what I saw. In the hour that had passed since I woke up, everything had changed. S.W.A.T. trucks and bodies lined the streets. Cars were burning and flipped in the road. Then I saw movement.
There was a girl running about 800 feet down the road. Time to give her a go, I thought to myself. I revved the engine and pushed down on the gas. As I turned out of the drive way I saw what the girl was running from. There were about forty, maybe more, of those things chasing her. I floored it and got to her in seconds. I stuck my head out of the window and yelled to her "Get in! I'm here to help." She opened the door and fell into the seat, slamming the door behind her.
"Go! Go! Go!" She yelled! I slammed on the gas and the car flew forward. We were on down the street in seconds. She looked frightened, like she had witnessed a massacre, then again she probably had. "Who are you? Why did you save me?" she asked.
"Well, not one for introductions I see." I said smiling, trying to hide how scared I was. "I'm Alex, and well, I saved you because i have nothing left to lose."
Then she turned toward me. This girl was beautiful. She had long, black hair, flawless skin, and blue eyes. "Well neither do I. That's kind of why I jumped into a stranger's car."
I looked at her with a glare. She glanced away quickly. "Look, I just lost my wife alright, I had to kill my neighbor and then I burnt my house to the ground. So the least you can do is show the guy who saved you a little respect."
"Alright alright, my bad. I'm Vanessa. I lived about a mile down from you, until those things showed up. They killed my family and then almost got me." She looked down, I could see the fear in her face. She had seen a lot of death in the last few hours.
