The most important native environment to implement into captive husbandry for the Northern Alligator Lizard is the temperate forest, with the addition of a small body of water. While each subspecies of Northern Alligator Lizard comes from a reasonably different area or terrain, they all prefer to be near water, whether that be a stream, river, lake, or manmade pool. This is because N.A.Ls are semi warm blooded and can warm themselves up, but cannot cool themselves down — this is what makes a body of water an important presence in a captive specimen's vivarium.
Northern Alligator Lizards are also semi arboreal; their native habitat will likely be rich with branches, sticks, and generally a considerable stretch of space to explore above ground. This includes, but is not limited to, boulders and rocks — although they are known to bask often, Northern Alligator Lizards enjoy being up high and make good use out of perches.
