Chapter 27. The Perfect Sad Song

Joey’s POV

I stood at the buffet table, watching Ethan talking and instructing the events personnel to set up the centre stage. I figured that they have prepared some surprise performances for Cate tonight.

Having nothing left to keep myself busy, I fought my boredom by downing the champagne glasses in front of me. I was already feeling quite giddy but continued with my new found past time and took another glass. I raised it to my lips and was about to down it, when a loud high pitched voice squealed behind me.

“Oh. My. Gosh.  Joey McAdams?!”

I immediately turned my head in surprise.

Standing in front of me, was a skinny girl about the same height as me. She was wearing a gold sparkly evening dress with a plunging neckline, showing off an ample amount of her cleavage. Her bleached blonde hair was curled into tiny ringlets, framing her supposed to be pretty face if only she didn’t have an awful lot of makeup on.  She placed her perfectly manicured hands on her hips as she scanned me from head to toe.

I resisted the urge to groan loudly as I recognised her.

“Sophie Ellis. Gee. It’s so nice to see you here.” I said with heavy sarcasm dripping on each word.

Sophie Ellis was the world’s biggest bitch known to mankind. Believe me when I say I’m not exaggerating, she literally made other people’s life a living hell. She was our head cheerleader in Avary Hills High and all throughout our high school years, her main goal was to become the hottest and most popular girl on campus. We were friends at some point, but not until she woke up one day and realised that I was her number one threat.  From that day, she poured all her efforts to make sure that she was always more popular than me.

I could still remember the look in her face when I was crowned as the prom queen. I was surprised that I was able to survive till graduation, when there were rumours of her planning on murdering me the day after.

Yep, that was how worse Sophie is. And seeing her today, I could say that nothing’s changed. She’s still the same old conceited stuck-up skank. Pardon me for my French.

“I know right? What are you doing here?” She asked, her squeaking voice breaking into my thoughts and instantly giving me a headache. She gave me one of her infamous fake smiles.

I fought my grimace from appearing and rather, placed on a fake smile too. “I was invited. How about you? You’re not crashing this party, aren’t you?” I asked back.

She laughed exaggeratedly as if she just heard the funniest joke in the world and I controlled myself from rolling my eyes. “Of course not silly! I’m invited too. I’m one of Bella Knight’s models and good friends with Cate.”

My eyebrow cocked in doubt. I wanted to ask her if she knew what the word ‘friends’ meant but didn’t say anything. Instead I just responded, “Good for you then. I always thought you were the model type, since you very well suited the description.”
