"Get up."
We obeyed.
"Follow me."
And so we did.
Where was I? I had no idea. But I had a feeling that I wasn't the only one. The two girls around me all had the same stone cold face that I would imagine I had, but their eyes twinkled with confusion and fear. We were walking down a long tunnel, but that was all I could make out. My vision was blurry, as if I was on the verge of tears.
After about 30 minutes of walking after the shadowed man, we reached an opening. It looked like a door, but it was sealed shut.
The man finally spoke, piecing together a sentence from a foreign language I did not understand. It seemed to be in a different language. Then, the man let out a sound; it sounded like long wail, and it blasted against my ears. I winced, but I couldn't cover my ears. I felt paralyzed, and as we walked, I saw less and less. I only saw black, but I could still feel my feet moving to the sound of the enduring scream that felt like it was lasting an eternity. I heard the door slide open slyly, and after a second of just standing still in my own black world, I felt the man grab me. He dragged me into the room, and I was dropped into oblivion. The two thuds around me stated the fact that the other girls had been dropped too. I stopped tensing my back, and just let myself drift off into, as some would say, an empty sleep.
The sunlight shown down my body, slowly creeping onto my toes and somehow making me feel tickled. A laugh escaped my body, and I saw some woman run towards me, giggling. She was beautiful, with her warm, green eyes reminding me of a sunny day out in the fields. Her arms embraced me in a hug, and we just sat there, watching the day pass by. I felt so happy. She turned to me, but I could see her kindness fade away. It turned into a pleading beg. She started to say something, to warn me, and then I woke up.
It was a dream. A memory, I was hoping. But not a reality, that's for sure. At least I had gotten my sight back, since I could see that I was still in the middle of nowhere, stuck in a black room with two strangers on each side of me. Except somehow, we had been moved. We were now sitting in chairs. I braced myself for the searing pain of digging plastic on the skin of my wrists, but nothing. I guess we were 'free' to roam around, if you could even call it that: the room was tiny, the size of a waiting room.
I wanted to do something. I wasn't just going to wait for the man to come again and do whatever it is they need us for. I stumble out a weak "Where?" hoping the other girls could hear me. Maybe they knew more than me, which was likely, since I was absolutely clueless. I waited for an answer, until the girl on my right side turned her head at me.
"Me?" She said in a high strung voice with such little strength in her voice, you could think she was saying her first word. I nodded in a rhythmic movement, maybe even a bit too much.
"Don't know."
Could she not speak English? I almost laughed, but then instantly realized how stupid I was being. I couldn't even put together a full sentence, so I should expect the same from her. We were both lost, and at least I knew I didn't yet 'stand out' from the three. That was my biggest fear so far.
Suddenly, the other girl stood up. She walked over to what we could guess was the front, and started pounding on the walls. She started shaking, but continued to ram her fists into the blankness of the wall in front of her. The whole time, she didn't make a sound. I finally realized, after watching her for over 5 minutes, that this would definitely disturb our captors.
I ran up to her, sliced through the air and grabbed her hand, before she could strike again. "Stop." I said. I pointed to the wall, and then to my ear. Hopefully she would understand. Understand that all I meant is that I didn't want to disturb our captors. if they heard us and got angry, it wasn't like we would have a chance against them. Without another glance, the girl quickly went to her chair and just sat there, as if I had just given her a time-out, like an obedient dog. Even though I was glad she stopped, I didn't like the feeling of just ordering her around. In the next three hours, which I counted to pass the time we just sat there and waited.
