I was lying under an old oak tree, writing. I had always loved to write; I’ve written since I was a little girl. It started to drizzle, then pour down rain by the bucketful. I ran back to keep my notepad from getting wet. I hear strained sobbing coming from the house.

“Mom?” I say as the door creaks open. “Are you alright?”  I scanned the living room for her.

“I’m over here,” I hear her croak, quietly, between sobs. I ran over to the kitchen and found her with her head in her hands. When she looked up at me, her eyes were bloodshot, as if she had been crying for hours. “ Up-up-upstairs,” she muttered.

I took the steps two at a time and searched around.  I immediately saw a small  trail of puddles and followed them to my parents room. My shoes squished on the wet carpet. I slowly looked up and saw how messy the room was. The closet door was in pieces on the ground, clothes were strewn around the room,  and the drawers looked like they had been rifled through. I gingerly walked on the soaked carpet. And then I saw it. I dropped to the ground and lay over his corpse, crying. My mother, who I didn’t hear before, came behind me and patted my shoulder.

Mom!” I screamed. “We have to do something! Call the police! Hurry!”

She took my face in her hands. “Eva, honey, you know why we can’t do that,” she whispered through her tears. “Just let your father be; we’ll have his funeral in a few days.” She hugged me tightly, and there we lay, a 15 year old girl curled up in a ball next to her mother, crying their eyes out. From that day on, I swore to myself that I would get revenge.
