When your brother gets engaged, the typical reaction is to be happy and want to get a dusty old bottle of champagne which is hidden somewhere in the depths of the cupboards. While it wasn't that old or dusty, it was still hidden at the back of the cabinets, unlikely to see the light of day soon. Instead, Diana was lying on the sofa, blowing rings of smoke into the air and silently crying. Jack had gone to bed the hour before, and although Diana's body was ultimately utterly drained, she couldn't bring herself to lock herself away in her room and never look at the light again.
Diana wasn't much of a smoker, but now and again, she knew the nicotine made her feel better. While alcohol was probably the better option of the two things when Diana was in this state, alcohol would be a bad idea. She would most likely start throwing things and having an emotional breakdown. So while she sat here trying her best to be happy for her brother, she couldn't help but think about the fallout of her relationships.
The moment Joseph had dumped Diana, she had led some random guy to bed. However, that isn't the story I am going to tell; that wasn't the moment that Diana was currently thinking about; that moment occurred three weeks later, the day everyone saw Diana completely break down in front of everyone she knew in this God-forsaken city.
It was a random party celebrating some event which was no doubt meaningless and perfectly aimed up by the fact that in the present-day Diana couldn't remember. Diana wore a black dress; it lay three inches above her knee. She had her hair in an updo. Her lips were a bright red colour, and her heels were to match. The back of her dress was nonexistent, and Dina was doing her best to show as much skin as possible without being stark naked.
Diana was standing in a crowded room, feeling for the first time completely and utterly lonely. She still managed to grab the attention of a few believable bachelors, also known as playboys; if they somehow scratched the surface of who Diana was, they would soon learn that she was a mess and that they should run as fast as they could.
This was a story she never told a soul, she never wanted her big mistake to haunt her, but as she lay on the sofa, she couldn't help but think that she wished she could go back and tell herself what she knew now. You see, while she was at that party, surrounded by people who didn't know her or wanted to know her more than the lie she was putting out. She ran into Joseph. What she didn't realise at the time but did not was that he had recently started a relationship with Peggy, but Diana was a stupid girl still in love, and this boy was going to take full advantage of her feelings.
