As the days go by, Lani and I grew closer and closer together. We became official just yesterday while we laid in her bed, cuddled up with her favorite artist playing.
"She just left me there, cold and unloved. My uncle answered the door and saw me. He raised me as his own, and I thank him so much," Lani says.
It was around 4am and we recently finished what couples do and might I say, she's a god. I'm cuddled up to her side as she has her arm around me while Show Me played on her speaker.
I hear the steadiness of her heartbeat. After she finishes her story, I tell of how I was bullied and had gotten out of a relationship before I came here. I left out everything else, not wanting to give myself away too much.
"What happened to your family?" I shift a little, uncomfortable. "You don't have to answer unless you want."
I smile and stretch up to plant a kiss on her soft lips. She rubs my waist and I giggle. She pulls away, "What? Why are you laughing?"
I shake my head, "Ticklish." She rolls her eyes and chuckles, "Child." I trace patterns on her stomach, "Lani?" She looks down at me, "Yes, mama?" I bite my bottom lip, "There's something I have to tell you. Something I've been hiding for a few months now."
She sits up and I follow suit. "What is it?" I take a deep breath and close my eyes. Here goes nothing.
"...When I got the news that Dinah was in critical condition, I got my dad to take me to the hospital. When I finally saw her after about two hours...she was already dead," I say through faux tears.
Lani rubs my back, a stuck expression on her face. "Did they catch who did it?" I shake my head, wiping my tears. She mutters a curse under her breath before standing up and running her fingers through her hair. "Do you think her momma knows? Hell, if Normani knows?"
I shrug, "I don't know, I've never met either." She blows out a breath. "Maybe if Mani wasn't such a druggie and her momma actually stopped drinking, she wouldn't be dead right now!" She rages.
She's obviously the angry mourning type. I stand in her line of pace, trying to calm her down.
"No, Camila, you don't understand. Dinah was my friend. More than my friend, we were family. She was always alone, so she'd call me over when I was in town. We'd smoke, chill, laugh, all that...now she's dead," she finally starts crying. I open my arms and she buries her face into my neck, sobbing. I started to sing to her,
Open your heart up and let me inside it
Open your heart up, heart upTake off the mask for me tonight
I wanna see, you for who you really are
And, baby, you don't have to hide
I wanna see, every flaw and every scarMmhm, right here, right now
Put your fences down
Oh-woah, oh
Right here, right now
Right here, right nowWhen I finish the song, Lani lifts her head and wipes her face, cursing under her breath. "Hey, it's ok to cry, Lani. I miss her, too." That wasn't a lie, I actually do miss her, but for a reason I won't reveal. She looks into my eyes, hers are so bloodshot. She gives a sad smile and backs up slightly. "What was that song you were singing?" I bite my bottom lip, "Dinah would sing it to me when I was upset."
Lani's eyes holds more sorrow before she says, "I'm gonna go wake Liyah up so she can go with Abel." I nod and she leaves my room, going next door. I hear, "Princess, wake up so you can go to Uncle Abe's house."
Followed by a groan from the slumbering child, "But, Mamá, I no wan go. I wan sleepy and be wit you and Mommy." I chuckle and shake my head. This might actually be nice.
