Jaxyl
The wolf covered the yards that seperated us in no time.
I was fully prepared to defend myself but Adarian came to my defense before I had the chance. He swiftly tackled her to the ground before she reached me.
She was growling and snapping visciously while he seemed to be lost in her dark, soulless
eyes. The sound of chains and shouting men caught my attention. "There she is!"
Two men were running in our direction. One of them carrying chains, and another carrying a muzzle.
"Did she try and attack you?" The guy with the muzzle asks as he helps his companion chain her.
"Yes, but he stopped her," I motion to Adarian who is still staring at the crazed wolf.
"Sorry about that. Some newbie forgot to shackle her to her cage."
"Cage?" he questions. "What's wrong with her?"
"You can't tell?" he asks incredulously. "She's rabid and well into the third stage."
They pull the wolf from the ground and start to take her away.
Now, I feel bad for her. Once a rabid wolf reaches the third stage of the disease, there is nothing that can be done to save them.
"That turned sad really quick," I comment as both Adarian and I watch them take the wolf back to wherever she escaped from. He still held the same expression on his face.
"She's my mate," he blurts out.
"What?" I ask in disbelief.
"The wolf, she's my mate," he confirms. "And she's completely rabid."
He chuckles, bitterly after a moment. "The Goddess sure has it in for me."
"Don't say that. Life is just unfair."
"Do you want to follow them and find out more about her?" I offer. He nods, agreeing.
We followed the scents of the two men and the wolf until we arrived at a concrete building. It looked like an institution on sight. The big, bright red letters painted on the building that read Sire Institution confirmed my interpretation.
We walk up to the front desk, the man sitting behind it eyeing us warily.
"Can I help you?" he asks.
"I'm here to ask about the wolf that got away not long ago, the rabid one," Adarian explains.
"Who are you?" his eyes shift between the two of us. "You don't smell like a Sire."
"We're here visiting from Blue-Valia," I answer his obnoxious question. "Now, can you please tell us about the wolf."
He squints at me momentarily. "What about her? I can't release any sensitive information about her to visitors."
"I'm not just a visitor. I'm her mate," Adarian tells him.
The man looks surprised but still skeptical. "Really?"
"Yes, I felt it when I stopped her from attacking us."
"Mhm," he leans back in his chair. "Her unit is that way," he points to his right. "But she's about to be transferred to the infirmary."
"Infirmary?"
"She's..." he didn't want to say his next words but he continued. "She's about to be put down."
"They've tried every treatment that they have. It's over for her," he explains with a hint of sorrow.
Adarian closes his eyes and takes a long, deep, calming breath. How he is always able to be so calm and patient all the time is beyond me. I am the complete opposite.
